Job summary

Heriot-Watt University is recruiting a Technical Support Assistant for the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences. You will join a large technical team, carrying out routine, reactive and planned maintenance to keep campus facilities safe, functional and aesthetically pleasing.

You will support fire safety, safety inspections and equipment setup for teaching labs, while interacting with staff and students. The role requires hands-on skills, good communication and a commitment to safety.

Qualifications

• City & Guilds qualification or equivalent maintenance experience
• Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, joinery and general DIY
• Experience of using a variety of hand tools
• Knowledgeable about safe work practices and procedures when using hand tools
• Experience of problem solving
• Good level of physical dexterity and ability to carry out a range of manual handling tasks
• Must have well-developed organisational and time management skills and attention to detail
• Good written, verbal and interpersonal skills
• Good understanding of health & safety regulations and procedures
• Able to work effectively as an individual and as a member of a team

Responsibilities

• Undertake fire safety compliance checks and report faults
• Record health and safety inspections on items within the school
• Accompany and assist contractors
• Prepare equipment for insurance inspections
• Attend to maintenance odd jobs in buildings/lab labs/workshops
• Provide support with undergraduate student labs
• Assist with stores/procurement and deliveries
• Assist teams with manual handling and workshop tidying
• Record working time on job sheets and maintain equipment records
• Engage in continuous learning and development
• Participate in PDR process and undertake training
• Cover for absent colleagues within the team
