Job summary

Portsmouth Water is seeking a skilled CAD/Data Technician to maintain and enhance the technical drawing library using AutoCAD. You will digitise assets and produce GA drawings, schematics, site plans, and data sets to support operational and engineering needs.

You will work with Engineers and other contractors, ensuring data accuracy, updating CAD networks, and analysing asset data to resolve issues and improve records, while adapting to new software and procedures.

Qualifications

  • GCSE Maths and English are required.
  • Level 3 Apprenticeship or equivalent is desirable.
  • Proven ability with CAD software and data handling is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Follow complex instructions and diagrams to create or modify drawings.
  • Take verbal direction and translate into sketches and calculations.
  • Produce plans, elevations, technical details and building layouts.
  • Coordinate filing, storage and retrieval of drawings.
  • Draw maps, diagrams or plans for construction projects.
  • Plan and draw details of supply management systems.
  • Identify problems and propose solutions.
  • Visit sites to survey locations for new or renewed water mains and produce as-laid drawings.
  • Collaborate with engineers and contractors on plans and drawings.
  • Use various software to convey materials, specs, and site requirements.
  • Uphold accuracy by interpreting complex data into drawings under supervision.
  • Prepare drawings for renewals schemes and data updates.

Portsmouth Water is seeking a skilled CAD/Data Technician to play a key role in maintaining and enhancing our technical drawing library. In this position, you’ll use AutoCAD to digitise assets and produce high-quality GA drawings, schematics, detailed site plans, and associated data sets, ensuring our records remain accurate, up-to-date, and ready to support operational and engineering needs.

What will you be doing?
Key Responsibilities
  • Following complex instructions and diagrams to create or modify drawings.
  • Taking verbal direction and implementing into sketches and calculation to produce the final work.
  • Produce plans, elevations, technical details and building layouts.
  • Coordinating filing, storage and retrieval of drawings.
  • Drawing maps, diagrams or plan for construction projects and structures.
  • Planning and drawing details of supply management systems.
  • Being able to define problems and finding solutions for them.
  • Visiting sites to survey the location of new and renewed water mains and produce as-laid drawings from the surveys.
  • Work with Engineers, building services and other contractors in producing plans and drawings.
  • Knowledge in using different software packages to convey instructions about materials, technical specifications, assembly procedures, measurements and site requirements.
  • Accuracy is important for CAD operators, as you need to take lots of complicated and technical information and interpret it into a drawing, with supervision.
  • Preparation of drawings for renewals schemes and other electronic drawings to include updates of CAD Network skeletons to support operational processes and procedures.
  • Data analysis of assets - working with data owners and operational teams to ensure data accuracy and completeness.
  • Assist with the clarification, validation and reconciliation of asset data.
  • Identify and correct data anomalies, gaps, and inconsistencies in asset records.
What do you need?
Skills, Qualifications & Competencies
  • Adaptable with good attention to detail.
  • Accountable for own actions with a willingness to collaborate with others, whilst developing and sharing knowledge, ideas, and best practice with others.
  • Empathetic, Self-Aware, and Comfortable with constructively challenging areas that could be improved.
  • Passionate about providing an excellent service, to our customer, colleagues and across the Water Industry.
  • A minimum of 5 GCSE’s, including Maths and English.
  • Level 3 apprenticeship or equivalent qualification or demonstrable equivalent comparable experience.
  • MS Office, specifically Excel, Word, PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of AutoCAD.
  • Ability to quickly learn new software applications.
  • To be flexible, decisive, able to recommend changes and adaptable to change.
  • Excellent communication, verbal, including presentation skills, written and numerate skills.
  • Accuracy and excellent attention to detail, with the ability to prioritise and organise workloads to meet deadlines.
