Job summary

South Western Railway (SWR) is seeking a hands-on maintenance technician to service, maintain and repair rolling stock in line with SWR specifications. You will follow safety, quality and environmental procedures while supporting depot operations.

Reporting to the Production Manager, you will help ensure documentation is complete, materials are available, and tasks are conducted safely, with knowledge sharing from technical staff briefs to improve depot performance.

• Obtain, use, care for, and return all test equipment and/or common user/specialist tools.

About the job

The holder of this post is responsible for servicing, maintenance, and repair of rolling stock in accordance with South Western Railway specifications. Plus adherence to depot protection, safety, quality and environmental procedures, rules and regulations in force.

Responsible to the Production Manager, the post provides support for the delivery of the product and completion of relevant documentation.

Your main responsibilities will be:

• Work to laid down specification and depot quality systems/ working instructions.
• Complete and check necessary documentation associated with work sheets, unit history etc.
• Ensure materials are available to carry out the necessary tasks and inform the Team Leader/C6 Project Manager of any issues.
• Undertake work in a safe manner and leading by example.

Safety Responsibilities

• Ensure your personal safety and that of others at all times.
• Comply with all safety systems and responsibilities at all times.
• Develop a pro-active approach to safety issues.
• Report any accidents, assaults or near miss occurrences in accordance with local reporting procedures.
• Report any safety irregularities, faults or unusual occurrences in the prescribed manner.
• Ensure all relevant PPE for tasks/activities is worn at all times and in accordance with local safety instructions / risk assessments.
• Participate in all staff briefings to ensure you are informed of all relevant information.
• Examine all safety procedures, notices, publications and instructions.

Environmental Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with ISO 14001:2004 Environmental Management System.
• Ensure staff dispose of waste in accordance with local instructions.
• Ensure staff handle and dispose of bio-waste and sharps in accordance with local instructions.
• Ensure all spillages of oil / chemical are cleaned up in accordance with local instructions.
• Report any environmental incidents to SQ&E Department.
• Examine all environmental procedures, notices, publications and instructions.

Quality Responsibilities

• Ensure compliance with ISO 9001:2000 Quality Management System.
• Ensure all maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with local quality procedures.
• Maintain all documents and records in accordance with relevant quality procedures.
• Examine all quality procedures, notices, publications and instructions.

Additional Activities

• Additional tasks as specified by Depot Manager.
• Principle accountabilities may differ from depot to depot and you will be required to sign the job description acknowledgement sheet.

You will need to have:

• Good Mechanical Background.
• Good communication skills.

Working pattern

Typical shifts include: 07.30 - 18.30 / 07.00 - 15.00 / 20.00 - 06.00
