Job summary

The University of Oxford is recruiting a Building Facilities Technician to support the Department of Chemistry in maintaining the laboratory and building environment on South Parks Road and related sites. You will work under the Building Manager to carry out essential maintenance, repairs and servicing to ensure a high-quality research and teaching space.

The role requires practical DIY ability, familiarity with power tools and workshop machinery, and good IT skills.

Qualifications

  • Demonstrable DIY skills and ability to switch between tasks with confidence.
  • Basic IT skills including MS Word, Excel and Outlook.
  • Health and safety principles knowledge is essential.

Responsibilities

  • Provide day-to-day maintenance, repairs and servicing of the laboratory and building environment.
  • Support the facilities management team under the Building Manager guidance.
  • Carry out hands-on technical tasks to ensure a safe, efficient research and teaching environment.
  • Assist with building and equipment maintenance across the Chemistry estate.

The University of Oxford has one of the largest and most successful chemistry departments in the world, and the Department of Chemistry is looking to recruit a Building Facilities Technician as part of our integrated facilities management team.

About the role

As Building Facilities Technician, you will provide support and assistance to the existing facilities management team in matters relating to day-to-day maintenance, repairs and servicing of the laboratory and building environment within the Department, ensuring that the building and equipment across the Chemistry estate are professionally maintained and serviced in a timely and efficient manner.

You will be required under the guidance of the Building Manager, alone or in conjunction with others, to use a range of skills and system knowledge including ‘hands on’ participation in technical tasks as required, to ensure a safe, efficient, productive and high-quality research and teaching environment.

About you

The successful candidate will possess a good level of demonstrable DIY skills, with the ability to switch for example from changing light bulbs to small building projects and back with confidence, including use of power tools, workshop machinery, ladders and scaffold towers.

You will be knowledgeable in relevant Health and Safety at work principles. You will have basic IT skills including MS Office (Word, Excel and Outlook), experience of working in a workshop and/or building maintenance will be an advantage. The post will be based in the Department of Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry Laboratory, South Parks Road, Oxford, OX1 3QR, you will also provide support in the Rodney Porter Building, Sibthorp Road, Oxford, OX1 3QU.

This is a full-time (36.5 hours per week), permanent position which is available immediately.
