Job description

Role: BEMS (Building Energy Management Systems) Design Engineer

Salary: £45,000 - £65,000 + benefits, dependent on experience

Location: Glasgow (Hybrid)

Overview

An established and highly respected multidisciplinary engineering consultancy is looking to appoint a BEMS Design Engineer to join its specialist Building Technologies team across the UK.

This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced BEMS professional looking to develop their career within a genuine engineering consultancy environment, working on technically interesting and high-profile projects across the UK.

The Building Technologies team delivers BEMS and controls solutions as part of a wider multidisciplinary building design practice, working alongside mechanical, electrical, public health, ICT and other specialist engineering teams. The project portfolio is diverse, with current work spanning aviation, defence, healthcare, education, commercial buildings and major infrastructure.

The role is predominantly design focused and will suit someone who understands how building control systems should be designed and integrated, rather than someone whose experience is primarily limited to commissioning or programming existing systems.

The Role

You will be involved in developing BEMS solutions from the early stages of projects, establishing control philosophies and design principles before information is issued to contractors.

Responsibilities will include:

  • Developing BEMS control strategies and design principles from first principles.
  • Producing BEMS specifications, control philosophies, schematics and points schedules.
  • Preparing technical design documentation for contractors and project teams.
  • Working closely with mechanical and electrical engineers to ensure BEMS strategies align with the wider building services design.
  • Reviewing and developing designs throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Attending client and contractor meetings where required.
  • Carrying out site surveys and inspections.
  • Witnessing BEMS installation and commissioning activities.
  • Providing technical advice and helping resolve issues during project delivery.
  • Supporting and mentoring less experienced engineers where appropriate.

The position is predominantly office and design based, with occasional site visits. Travel will generally be planned around project requirements rather than being a significant part of the role.

Projects

Current and recent work includes aviation projects involving Heathrow, London City Airport and the Manchester Airport framework, which also covers East Midlands and Stansted airports. The team also has a strong pipeline across defence, healthcare and NHS projects, education, commercial offices and other complex building environments.

There is also the opportunity to contribute to international projects, including work across the Middle East, which is delivered from the UK team.

The variety of projects means engineers can gain exposure to different building types, control strategies and engineering challenges rather than being restricted to a single sector.

About You

The business is open to candidates from a variety of backgrounds. Consultancy experience would be beneficial but is not essential, and engineers currently working for BEMS contractors, system integrators or controls specialists will be considered.

The key requirement is genuine understanding of BEMS and controls design.

Experience with manufacturers such as Trend, Tridium/Niagara, Siemens, Schneider, Honeywell or similar platforms is useful, but specific manufacturer experience is not essential. The team is more interested in someone who understands the underlying principles of controls design and can develop a solution from first principles.

For example, someone with several years of experience producing specifications, control strategies and design documentation would be considered more suitable than someone with significantly more experience who has worked exclusively on commissioning a particular BMS platform.

Ideally, you will have a minimum of 2-3 years' BEMS/BMS experience or more, although the position is deliberately flexible across several levels of seniority. Engineers with strong design experience can be considered at the upper end of the salary range, while those with good commissioning or project engineering experience but less design exposure can be supported and developed.

You should have:

  • Experience within BEMS, BMS, controls or building services.
  • A strong understanding of HVAC and building services control principles.
  • Experience developing control strategies, specifications and/or points schedules.
  • The ability to produce and interpret BEMS schematics and technical documentation.
  • An understanding of how BEMS integrates with mechanical and electrical building services.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to work with clients, contractors and multidisciplinary teams.
  • Site experience covering surveys, installation, testing or commissioning would be advantageous.
  • A willingness to undertake occasional UK travel.
Development and Benefits

The role offers strong long-term development opportunities within a large multidisciplinary engineering environment.

The business actively supports professional development and Chartership, including professional memberships, technical forums, CPD and internal training. Engineers also have the opportunity to broaden their technical knowledge by working alongside mechanical, electrical, ICT and other building services specialists.

Career progression is supported through structured personal development reviews, with opportunities to progress technically or professionally depending on experience and individual aspirations.

The position also offers hybrid working, a competitive benefits package and the opportunity to work on a diverse portfolio of major UK and international projects.

This is a particularly good opportunity for a BEMS engineer who has developed their experience within a contractor or systems integration environment and now wants to move further into design consultancy, or for an existing consultancy engineer looking for more technically challenging projects and wider multidisciplinary exposure.

If you have strong BEMS knowledge and can demonstrate that you understand why a control system should work in a particular way, rather than simply how to commission one, this could be an excellent opportunity to take the next step in your career.

Calibre Search promote equality in the workplace and we welcome applications from all suitably skilled or qualified candidates regardless of their sex, race, disability, religion/beliefs, sexual orientation or age.
