Job description

Building and Maintenance Officer

Location: Birmingham

Salary: £26,520 – £32,240 per annum

Our client is more than just an educational institution; they are a vibrant community dedicated to nurturing creativity and empowering students to reach their full potential. With campuses across the UK, Ireland, and Germany, they offer a diverse range of courses in modern music, performing arts, filmmaking and creative technology. Their commitment to excellence in creative arts education sets them apart, providing students with the knowledge, skills, and opportunities they need to succeed in their chosen fields.

About the Role

As a Building and Maintenance Officer, you will support the day-to-day running of campus buildings, helping to ensure they are safe, well maintained and ready to support teaching, learning and wider activity.

Working as part of the wider Campus Operations team, you’ll take a hands-on role in maintaining buildings and equipment, preparing spaces, and responding to day-to-day issues as they arise. You’ll also act as a key point of contact on campus, working with colleagues, contractors and service teams to keep things running effectively.

A key aspect of this role is supporting the Performing Arts faculty. Working closely with Academic and Production teams, you'll help maintain specialist teaching, rehearsal and performance spaces, ensuring facilities and technical equipment are safe, functional and ready to support learning activities, rehearsals and productions.

What You’ll Do:
  • Support the day-to-day operation of campus buildings, including opening and closing in line with agreed procedures and security requirements.
  • Prepare and maintain internal and external spaces so they are ready for teaching, learning and events.
  • Monitor building presentation, identifying and resolving issues that affect the campus environment.
  • Carry out routine checks of buildings and equipment, addressing issues or escalating where needed.
  • Undertake basic maintenance tasks and repairs, using judgement to determine when specialist support is required.
  • Work with contractors on site, helping to coordinate access and ensure work is carried out safely and with minimal disruption.
  • Support the operation and maintenance of performing arts teaching, rehearsal and performance spaces, ensuring they remain safe, functional and ready for use.
  • Provide operational support to Academic and Production teams, assisting with the preparation, maintenance and basic troubleshooting of technical equipment and performance environments.
  • Assist with the upkeep, testing and safe operation of lighting, audio and related technical equipment, escalating specialist repairs where required.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance activity, inspections and completed work.
  • Support health and safety activity on campus, including inspections, audits and routine compliance checks.
  • Provide first line support for equipment and basic IT issues, escalating to central teams where necessary.
  • Act as a first point of contact for building and maintenance queries, resolving routine issues independently.
  • Contribute to operational projects and support wider campus activity as required.
  • Work flexibly across teams, providing practical support where needed to maintain effective service delivery.
What You’ll Bring:
  • Experience working in a building, maintenance, facilities, performing arts, theatre or live events environment.
  • Experience working within a performing arts, theatre, production or live events setting.
  • Experience working with lighting and audio equipment, including basic setup, maintenance or troubleshooting activities.
  • The ability to organise and prioritise work, responding to changing demands with minimal supervision.
  • Clear and effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • The ability to build effective working relationships with colleagues, students, contractors and service teams.
  • A practical, problem-solving approach and sound judgement in day-to-day situations.
  • Good digital skills, including experience using systems to record and manage information.
  • A working understanding of health and safety requirements in a maintenance or facilities setting.
Working Pattern

This is a full-time role working 37.5 hours per week on a rotating shift basis, helping our client provide consistent support across the day.

You’ll work a mix of the following shifts:

  • Early: 07:30am – 4:00pm
  • Mid: 10:00am – 6:30pm
  • Late: 1:00pm – 9:30pm
