Role Description

COLLABORATION Our facilities team works with tutors, students, technicians, managers, events teams and external partners to make things happen.

- The Role As Facilities Officer, you'll play an important part in the day-to‑day life of BN1 Arts. You'll make sure our studios, teaching rooms, equipment and shared spaces are safe, clean, secure, functional and ready for action.
- You'll work closely with the Facilities/Studio Manager and wider BN1 Arts team to support teaching, rehearsals, performances, events and the everyday experience of our students and staff. No two days are likely to be exactly the same.
- One day you might be preparing a studio for a dance class, the next helping set up a gig, checking equipment, reporting a building issue or making sure the college is ready for students arriving the next morning. We're looking for someone who is practical, reliable, organised and proactive, with a genuine interest in working in a creative environment.
What You'll Be Doing:
Keeping our spaces running
- Support the day‑to‑day running of BN1 Arts HQ and Brighton Youth Centre.
- Work with SLT, Course Leaders, Events, Student Services and tutors to support curricular and extracurricular activity.
- Help prepare spaces for lessons, rehearsals, auditions, performances, showcases, gigs and other events.
- Assist with setting up and providing technical support for external events where required.
- Log and report building faults promptly.
- Work with Facilities/Studio Manager and the senior team on repairs, improvements and refurbishment projects.
- Assist the Facilities/Studio Manager with general estates duties.
- Make sure teaching rooms have the equipment they need for the day's activity.
- Respond to tutor and staff equipment requirements.
- Regularly check equipment to make sure it is safe and in good working order.
- Maintain the BN1 Arts equipment asset list.
- Identify and report faults quickly.
- Make recommendations for new or replacement equipment where appropriate.
- Use your knowledge of music and creative equipment to help support staff and students.
Security & opening/closing
- Ensure site users follow BN1 Arts security procedures.
- Open and secure the building as required.
- Set and deactivate security alarms.
- Check that windows and doors are secure.
- Ensure equipment is switched off and safely stored.
- Check lights and air conditioning are switched off where appropriate.
- Ensure displayed equipment is appropriately secured/alarmed.
- Make sure the building is secure before leaving.
Keeping BN1 looking its best
- Check that the building is clean and tidy before staff and students arrive.
- Monitor the environment throughout the day.
- Check that cleaning standards are being maintained.
- Liaise with contracted cleaners and report any issues.
- Monitor toilet facilities and report plumbing or sanitation issues.
- Empty bins and vacuum reception areas when required.
- Help keep the area immediately outside BN1 Arts clean and welcoming. Health & Safety
Health & Safety
- Be familiar with BN1 Arts Health & Safety procedures.
- Maintain awareness of potential hazards across both sites.
- Ensure staff and students follow relevant Health & Safety requirements.
- Report non‑compliance or concerns to the Facilities/Studio Manager.
- Help maintain safe working environments across our studios, teaching and shared spaces.
Supporting our community
- Help maintain a welcoming and professional environment for students, staff and visitors.
- Work collaboratively with staff and students to resolve practical issues.
- Help ensure our spaces are accessible, inclusive and fit for purpose.
- Be approachable and professional when working with young people.

- Experience working in an education, arts, music, events or similar environment.

Safeguarding BN1 Arts is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people. The successful candidate will be required to complete appropriate pre‑employment checks, including references, an Enhanced DBS and Barred List check, and Right to Work verification. The successful candidate will complete BN1 Arts Safeguarding and Prevent training and will be expected to follow all relevant safeguarding and child protection policies and procedures. All staff are expected to participate in relevant training and development to ensure they remain up to date with safeguarding responsibilities.
