Job summary

Expleo Group in Belfast is seeking a Design Engineer to work on concept vessel design, complex engineering tasks, and decarbonisation projects. The role is hybrid with 2-3 days on site in Belfast, offering exposure to global maritime programmes and collaboration across disciplines.

You will integrate 3D models and 2D drawings for marine systems, support production drawings, and ensure regulatory compliance while engaging with customers and internal teams.

Qualifications

• HND or equivalent experience in naval/marine design or related field.
• Professional membership in engineering institution (RINA, IMarEST, IMechE, IET).
• Experience in naval/misher or commercial ship design, construction or maintenance is advantageous.

Responsibilities

• Apply and develop a breadth of engineering skills for marine systems, hull, structures and outfitting.
• Create and integrate 3D models and 2D drawings, ensure design accuracy and regulatory alignment.
• Manage model/drawing release and version control in PLM; develop routing for mechanical and fluid systems.
• Perform engineering checks to validate system integrity and compliance with regulations.
• Produce detailed integration and production drawings for assembly and manufacturing.
• Source and specify standard mechanical components ensuring procurement readiness.
• Investigate regulatory findings and develop practical compliance solutions.
• Deliver high-quality engineering solutions to clients.

Job description

As a Design Engineer every day at Expleo will be out of the ordinary and will require you to be dynamic and responsive to changes in technology, innovation, and client requirements. You will have the opportunity to get involved in concept vessel design, complex engineering design, creation of new & innovative tools & processes, delivery of engineering consultancy services, and the development of decarbonisation solutions & other emerging technologies across a wide range of global maritime programmes. This role is being offered on a hybrid basis with 2-3 days on site in Belfast.

Responsibilities

• Apply & continue to develop a breadth of engineering skills, in the discipline of Marine Engineeringand where applicable, other related disciplines.


• Integrate 3D models and 2D drawings for various marine systems, hull, structures and outfitting, performing detailed checks and implement necessary modifications to ensure design accuracy and alignment.


• Manage the release process for models and drawings, maintaining version control within PLM systems. Develop routing schemes for mechanical and fluid systems, ensuring optimal layout within the vessel constraints.


• Conduct comprehensive engineering checks to validate system integrity and compliance with regulatory requirements.


• Produce detailed integration drawings and part-level manufacturing drawings to support system assembly and production processes.


• Source and specify standard mechanical components, such as pipe fittings, ensuring compatibility and availability for procurement and production needs.


• Investigate technical issues identified by regulatory bodies, developing practical engineering solutions to meet compliance standards.


• Deliver high quality solutions to our customers and clients.


• Investigate & solve complex technical problems in concept, basic and detailed design phases.


• Develop & maintain written technical and administrative procedures, standards, processes, practices, guidelines, and standards.


• Assist with the maintenance & improvement in quality standards of engineering, design, and production information.


• Interface directly with our customers and clients, representing our teams to discuss engineering solutions to complex problems.

Qualifications

• HND qualified in a relevant STEM discipline (e.g., Naval Architecture, Ship Science, Marine Technology, Marine Engineering), or equivalent experience in the naval and commercial ship design, construction, or maintenance domain.


• Professional member of a relevant engineering institution (e.g., RINA, IMarEST, IMechE, IET).

• An understanding of classification society rules, regulations, and standards in the design, construction, and in-service lifecycle phases.

Experience

• The successful candidate will ideally have post-graduate experience (or non-degree qualified) working in either the commercial or naval maritime domain.

• Experience in a technical consulting environment, leading and/or supporting multiple engineering projects & customers.


• Experience working with CTVs
