We have two Band 6 Specialist Screening Practitioner (SSP) vacancies within South Derbyshire Bowel Cancer Screening Centre (SDBCSC), based at Royal Derby Hospital.
As a successful applicant, you will become part of a friendly, supportive team that has developed excellent working relationships with endoscopy and cancer services across both Royal Derby Hospital and Queen's Hospital Burton.
The SDBCSC has been providing high-quality bowel cancer screening to the local population for over 19 years. The service covers a population of more than 600,000 people across South Derbyshire and East Staffordshire, operating from two screening sites. We are proud of the outstanding, patient‑centred care we provide and our commitment to delivering an excellent screening experience for all patients. The role provides the opportunity to work in a flexible, autonomous, and both demanding and rewarding environment.
The successful candidates will be required to work across both sites and participate in a rota that includes some evening and weekend shifts.
Applicants should have a minimum of five years' post-registration experience, ideally with an endoscopy and/or gastrointestinal background. Within the first year of appointment, successful candidates will be required to undertake and successfully complete the SSP course at either Liverpool John Moores University or the University of Plymouth.
We are looking for a motivated and enthusiastic team player. The role is varied and ranges from conducting nurse led clinics, attending colonoscopy sessions, processing histology outcomes and providing results including cancer diagnosis to supporting patients throughout the screening process and engaging in health promotion.
Previous experience and knowledge in one of the following areas is essential screening, gastroenterology, endoscopy, colorectal, pre-assessment or oncology.
You must have excellent communication skills and be able to communicate sensitive and complex information to both patients and colleagues, including breaking significant news. The post holder will have a shared responsibility to meet the Trust, bowel cancer screening programme (BCSP), and national targets, be able to prioritise and manage their own workload and work as a team to ensure the smooth running of the service.
South Derbyshire BCSP is based at Royal Derby Hospital but the post holder will be required to travel to another site in Burton when necessary. The ability to travel between Derby and Burton to enable the smooth running and start times of colonoscopy lists is essential.
The service runs mainly between the hours of 8:00am to 6:00pm but the post holder should be flexible as later start and finish times may be required to cover clinical activity of the programme.
