Job summary

Confidential, a long-established accountancy practice in Somerset, is seeking a Bookkeeper to join their small team in Langport. You'll manage bookkeeping for a portfolio of clients using cloud software and contribute to VAT returns and management accounts.

Working closely with colleagues, you’ll maintain accurate records, support client queries, and help deliver a proactive, personal service to a loyal client base in a friendly, collaborative environment.

Qualifications

• Experience bookkeeping in an accountancy practice or similar environment.
• Knowledge of Xero, Sage and/or QuickBooks.
• Experience preparing VAT returns.
• Strong understanding of double-entry bookkeeping principles.
• Excellent organisational skills and attention to detail.
• Confident communication skills, both written and verbal.
• Ability to manage multiple deadlines and workloads effectively.
• AAT qualification or equivalent advantageous but not essential.
• Strong IT skills and confidence using cloud-based accounting software.

Responsibilities

• Maintain bookkeeping records for a portfolio of clients.
• Process sales invoices, purchase invoices, receipts, and payments.
• Complete bank reconciliations and investigate discrepancies.
• Prepare and submit VAT returns.
• Assist with management accounts preparation.
• Support clients with day-to-day accounting queries.
• Work with cloud accounting platforms, including Xero, QuickBooks, and Sage.
• Review bookkeeping records to ensure compliance and accuracy.
• Liaise directly with clients to obtain information and provide support.
• Assist the wider accounts team with year-end accounting requirements.
• Maintain strong client relationships and deliver excellent customer service.
