Job summary

Brighton College in Brighton, England, is seeking a Boarding Matron to work with the Housemaster/Housemistress to provide the pastoral care and supervision necessary for the welfare and safety of pupils.

You will manage day-to-day routines, coordinate domestic duties, and act as a supportive parent figure within the House, ensuring a calm, well-organised living environment. The role requires warmth, strong communication with pupils, parents and staff, and safeguarding responsibilities.

Qualifications

• Genuine interest in working in a school environment.
• Experience in similar roles would be desirable.
• Warm and helpful manner.
• Highly organised.
• Self-motivation with a can-do, positive attitude.
• Ability to talk to pupils, parents and staff at all levels.
• First aid trained (if not trained the successful candidate will be given full training).

Responsibilities

• Being the first point of contact with parents regarding daily domestic issues.
• Managing the day-to-day routines of the House.
• Pastoral input as a 'parent figure' in the house and important team member.
• Help maintain discipline with College and House rules and guidelines.
• Liaise with parents, Health Centre and Catering about medical and dietary needs.
• Check registration data and assist with follow-up.
• Visit pupils’ rooms regularly to check tidiness and assist with strategies.
• Attend weekly meetings with Director of Boarding/Logistics Manager.
• Liaise with Catering, Cleaning, Maintenance and Grounds Departments.
• Liaise with laundry staff to ensure bed linen and clothing are laundered and returned.
• Oversee bed changes fortnightly and sewing for pupils.
• Keep House and rooms clean for visits by parents and Admissions.
• Provide administrative support to Housemaster/Housemistress.
• Assist with weekend arrangements and Open Days.
