Job description

South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology (SYBP) is on a transformational journey to fully integrate our existing pathology services, providing the best possible service for patients and clinicians across the Integrated Care System. Our mission is to deliver high-quality, innovative laboratory medicine solutions to improve health, enhance patient care, safeguard clinical outcomes, and support healthcare transformation across SYB and beyond.

A vacancy has arisen for a Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and hardworking team in the Clinical Chemistry department at Sheffield Children's Hospital, part of the South Yorkshire and Bassetlaw Pathology Network hosted by Sheffield Teaching Hospitals (STH). The successful candidate will rotate between acute, metabolic, and regional newborn bloodspot screening.

We seek highly motivated, enthusiastic Biomedical Scientists with a flexible approach to work. Participation in out-of-hours services is essential once deemed competent, with the acute service operating 24/7, 365 days a year.

Applicants must possess an IBMS-accredited degree in Biomedical Sciences, preferably with relevant Clinical Chemistry experience, and hold current HCPC registration. For Band 6 roles, completion of the IBMS specialist portfolio in Clinical Biochemistry is required.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Perform tests efficiently within designated times, adhering to protocols and standards.
  2. Maintain high scientific and technical standards.
  3. Ensure complex laboratory equipment functions accurately for reliable results.
  4. Participate in out-of-hours rotas covering 24/7 Biochemistry services.
  5. Work independently, being accountable for professional actions.
  6. Monitor quality standards and assist with audits as needed.
  7. Manage stock levels and assist with ordering and organization.
  8. Engage in regular CPD activities to stay current.

This vacancy is banded based on experience, typically starting at Band 5 unless the candidate meets the criteria for Band 6.

We value and respect our staff and the community we serve, offering excellent benefits, professional development opportunities, and policies supporting work-life balance.
