Thisis an exciting time to join one of the largest Pathology departments in thecountry, we are imminently moving to our new £30m Pathology building (on theSt. Jamess University Hospital site) and new Acute Hospital Laboratory (onthe Leeds General Infirmary site). The Department of Blood Sciences isseeking to recruit experienced and innovative Specialist Biomedical Scientistin Biochemistry to help shape, deliver and improve the service we deliver toour patients.

Thesuccessful candidate will work within a large hub laboratory utilisingcutting edge technology, serving both Leeds Teaching Hospitals and the widercommunity. This includes the regional Oncology centre and the LeedsChildren's Hospital, which is a unique opportunity for the successfulcandidate to gain wide ranging experience within the discipline. Thesuccessful candidate will be involved in the exciting transition to our new,purpose-built hub laboratory at St. Jamess University Hospital.
Tobe considered for this Specialist Biomedical Scientist (AFC Band 6) positionin Clinical Biochemistry, you must be registered with the HCPC and havesignificant Biochemistry experience. If registering with the HCPC on or after2006, a completed IBMS Specialist Portfolio is a requirement of this post.Candidates undertaking a Specialist Portfolio will also be considered on AFCAnnex 21 Band 6, providing it is clear from the application what progress hasbeen made, and what support is required.
Successfulcandidates should possess the leadership skills to supervise and support morejunior members of staff within the laboratory. In addition, the candidatewill support the department maintain its accreditation status to ISO15189.Relevant training and support will be provided for the successful candidate.
OurPathology services operate across two large university teaching hospitals inthe Leeds Metropolitan area with a population of around 2.3 million andprovide services both regionally and nationally. In addition to the newlaboratory projects, we are also working to deploy a West YorkshireAssociation of Acute Trusts (WYAAT) regional LIMS, and a new ManagedPathology Service Contract. Construction on the new Leeds Children's Hospitalis also about to start, which will include all in-patient maternity and specialistneonatal services to become the largest single site maternity centre in theUK.
Thesuccessful candidate will be well supported by the wider scientific andclinical teams. The Blood Sciences Department is accredited to ISO15189 andby the IBMS as a training laboratory in both Clinical Biochemistry andHaematology.

Asa specialist biomedical scientist you will be a fully competent member of thedepartment. Normally working as part of a team, you will be expected toperform a wide range of specialist clinical technical investigations. Atother times you may be required to work alone and independently, for examplewhen working on-call. Working in different sections of the department youwill have the knowledge and skills necessary to contribute towards theprovision of an accurate and timely service for patients. You will beexpected to apply professional judgements and specialist skills totechnically complex and sometimes difficult situations. Within the team youmay be required to organize the tasks of support workers. You will berequired to communicate highly complex information, often related to patientmanagement and care, to colleagues, healthcare staff and otherorganizations.
Youwill be required to attend MDT and other user meetings where appropriate.Post holders will be involved in R&D and may lead projects, undersupervision, where appropriate.
Thepost holder will assist in the day to day running of the laboratory or aparticular section of the laboratory, under supervision/delegation of theadvanced biomedical scientist. This will involve QC and EQA authorisation,training, risk and incident assessment and investigation and HR procedures.The post holder will be expected to have an awareness of budgets and resourceresponsibility.
In order to carry out the job sufficientlyand effectively you will have successfully studied for an accredited degreein biomedical sciences, or other equivalent qualification acceptable to theHealth Care Professions Council (HCPC) and the Institute of BiomedicalScience (IBMS). You will have developed a range of competencies andspecialist knowledge in all aspects of the discipline through extensivepractical experience, in house training and structured study through the IBMSspecialist portfolio, programme,alternatively, under Annex 21 working towards (up to a maximum of 3 years)IBMS Specialist Portfolio) and willcontinue to develop your skills and knowledge subject to the requirements ofcontinuous professional development (CPD).In addition, basic computer skills and use of various laboratory andTrust based databases are essential to carry out your work.
Thepost holder will have undertaken all mandatory training required for theirrole and be willing to attend training to facilitate learning in areas suchas basic HR functions, appraisal, incident investigation etc.
