The University of Manchester Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies seeks a postdoctoral research associate (PDRA) to work on data collection and processing for the BA/Leverhulme Small Grant-funded project titled “Translation as Method in Global Mental Health”.
The project is a BA/Leverhulme Small Grant-funded project titled “Translation as Method in Global Mental Health”, run by Dr Anna Strowe (PI) from the Centre for Translation and Intercultural Studies and Dr Richard Fay (Co-I) from the Manchester Institute for Education. It aims at assessing the ways in which Translation and Interpreting (T&I) are used in GMH research and how that use is reported and understood (or not) as a part of the methodology in the eventual outputs. The project will run from 1 July 2025 to 1 March 2026, and aims at two main outputs, which will be co-authored by the team (including the PDRA): one a bibliometric analysis of the outputs and the other a discourse analysis-based study of the discussions of language and translation present in the dataset. The bulk of the data collection will happen from July through September, with analysis and writing up in the autumn and winter.
The PDRA position is for 240 hours, mainly July-September (the first three months of the project), and largely self-scheduled (there is some flexibility here; the main data collection will be July-September, when the bulk of the hours will need to be scheduled, but the contribution to analysis and writing up can be flexible if the successful candidate wishes to complete their work in those first three months rather than continuing on the lower FTE). The PDRA will, in concert with the PI (Dr Anna Strowe) and Co-I (Dr Richard Fay), establish a set of parameters for collecting a corpus of recent research articles in GMH, as well as protocols for processing and coding the articles. The data collection will take place mainly from July-September 2025, supervised by Dr Strowe. Depending on the time needed for the data collection and scheduling needs, the RA will be more or less involved in analysis and writing up of one of the two outputs, which will take place October-February (the final five months of the project). (They will be listed as a co-author on both in any case for their role in data collection and processing.)
The successful candidate will have research experience (PhD or equivalent) in translation studies, global mental health, applied linguistics, or a related discipline and should be comfortable navigating online research journals and reading academic papers.
Shortlisted candidates will be asked to submit by email a sample of their academic writing, whether that is a published article or a thesis chapter, before their interview (interview date TBD but within one to two weeks of the closing date).
Please note this role is not eligible for sponsorship under the Skilled Worker route of the Points Based System. Candidates will need to be able to demonstrate their right to work in the UK in order to be eligible to take up the post.
As a member of research staff, the PDRA will also have access to the University of Manchester’s Researcher Development resources (https://www.researcherdevelopment.manchester.ac.uk/researcher-development-for-research-staff/).
