Job summary

McLaughlin & Harvey Ltd is seeking a BI Developer to design, develop and maintain Power BI models, reports and dashboards across multiple sectors. You will write SQL for data preparation, work with the data warehouse, and translate business requirements into technical BI solutions.

The role requires hands-on Power BI, strong DAX and SQL skills, and the ability to collaborate with colleagues across the business while ensuring data quality and security in line with UK GDPR.

Qualifications

  • Hands-on Power BI Desktop experience with data modelling and report development.
  • Strong knowledge of DAX, measures, filter context and relationships.
  • Solid SQL development skills, including joins, aggregations and window functions.
  • Understanding of dimensional modelling with facts and dimensions and star schemas.
  • Experience with relational databases and data warehouse environments.
  • Attention to detail and ability to validate data accuracy and consistency.
  • Able to translate business requirements into technical solutions and communicate clearly.
  • Good collaboration within a team and with non-technical stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop and maintain Power BI semantic models, star schemas and DAX measures.
  • Create clear Power BI reports and dashboards; enhance existing solutions.
  • Write and optimise SQL for data prep, transformation and reporting.
  • Gather requirements from across the business and translate into technical solutions.
  • Present findings clearly to technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Test reports and data solutions; validate against source systems.
  • Investigate and resolve data quality and performance issues.
  • Document BI solutions, data models and reporting processes.
  • Follow source control and deployment processes before releasing to production.
  • Handle sensitive data securely in line with company policies and UK GDPR.
  • Support in-house web applications and collaborate with IT/development teams.

What you will be doing

  • Design, develop and maintain Power BI semantic models, including star schemas, relationships, calculated measures and DAX.
  • Develop clear, intuitive and well-organised Power BI reports and dashboards, as well as maintaining and improving existing reporting solutions.
  • Write, maintain and optimise SQL used for data preparation, transformation and reporting within the data warehouse.
  • Work with colleagues across the business to gather and understand reporting and analytical requirements and translate these into appropriate technical solutions.
  • Present and explain data, reports and analytical findings clearly to both technical and non-technical colleagues.
  • Test reports and data solutions thoroughly, validating results against source systems before release.
  • Investigate and resolve data quality, reporting and performance issues.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation for BI solutions, data models and reporting processes.
  • Maintain development work under source control and follow appropriate review and deployment processes before changes are released into production.
  • Ensure sensitive business, HR and personal data is handled securely and in accordance with company policies and UK GDPR requirements.
  • Contribute to future development projects aimed at improving the organisation's data, analysis and reporting capabilities.
  • Provide an appropriate level of technical support for the company's in-house developed web applications, ensuring support requests are investigated and resolved within agreed service levels.
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the IT and development teams.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

  • Hands-on experience with Power BI Desktop, including data modelling, Power Query and report development.
  • Good working knowledge of DAX, including an understanding of measures, filter context and relationships.
  • Good SQL development skills, including joins, aggregations, and window functions.
  • Good understanding of dimensional modelling, including facts, dimensions and star-schema design.
  • Experience working with relational databases and data warehouse environments.
  • Strong attention to detail and a disciplined approach to validating the accuracy and consistency of data.
  • Ability to investigate discrepancies between reports and underlying source data.
  • Good communication skills, with the ability to explain technical and data-related concepts clearly to non-technical colleagues.
  • Ability to gather business requirements and translate business problems into clearly defined technical requirements and outcomes.
  • Ability to work effectively as part of a team and independently using own initiative.

Desirable

  • Microsoft Fabric, including Data Warehouse, Lakehouse and Data Pipelines.
  • Git and Azure DevOps, or equivalent source-control and pull-request workflows.
  • Power BI Project (PBIP) format.
  • Tabular Editor.
  • Power BI Row-Level Security (RLS).
  • Power BI deployment pipelines and controlled deployment processes.
  • Power BI performance analysis and optimisation using tools such as DAX Studio.
  • Experience with SSIS or other ETL/data integration technologies.
  • Experience supporting or integrating BI solutions with business applications.
  • Relevant Microsoft certification, such as PL-300 (Power BI Data Analyst) or DP-600 (Fabric Analytics Engineer). Certification is beneficial but not essential.
