Job summary

Teaching Personnel is recruiting a Behaviour Mentor for Durham secondary schools to provide regular 1:1 mentoring and support disengaged students. The role focuses on calm, patient, relationship-based mentoring rather than formal behavioural intervention.

You will work with pastoral staff to support reintegration, contribute to behaviour plans, and uphold safeguarding responsibilities in a long-term, ASAP-start position.

Qualifications

• Experience in mentoring or pastoral support with young people.
• Ability to build rapport with students who find school challenging.
• Calm, consistent, and non-judgemental approach.
• Confidence managing difficult situations without escalation.
• Enhanced DBS on Update Service.
• Experience in youth work or education is advantageous.

Responsibilities

Teaching Personnel is recruiting a Behaviour Mentor for secondary schools across Durham, with positions available immediately. This is a pastoral, relationship-focused role — distinct from a formal behaviour specialist position — and it's one that suits someone who connects naturally with young people, earns trust quickly, and understands that behaviour is rarely just about behaviour.

You’ll be working with students who are struggling to engage with school, supporting them through a consistent mentoring relationship and working alongside pastoral and inclusion staff to help them find their footing. It's a role where personality, patience, and genuine commitment matter more than formal qualifications.

What the role involves:

• Providing regular 1:1 mentoring sessions to students with identified behavioural needs
• Building trusted, consistent relationships with some of the school's most disengaged students
• Supporting students in lessons and around school to manage their behaviour positively
