Job description

Flourish Education are currently recruiting for Graduate Teaching Assistants to work within secondary schools across Oldbury, Smethwick and the surrounding Birmingham areas. We are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and confident graduates who are interested in gaining valuable experience within education and supporting young people throughout their school journey.

Have you recently graduated and are considering a career in teaching, educational psychology, youth work or another profession involving young people? Perhaps you have a degree in English, Maths or Science, and would like to gain practical experience before deciding on your next career step.

This is an excellent opportunity for graduates who are keen to develop their skills, build confidence in a school environment and make a positive difference to the lives of secondary-age pupils. Previous school experience is beneficial but is not essential for every opportunity, as a positive attitude, willingness to learn and genuine interest in education are equally important.

You will support pupils across Key Stages 3 and 4, assist teachers during lessons and help students remain focused and engaged with their learning. Depending on the school, you may also support pupils who require additional help with their academic progress, confidence, behaviour or individual learning needs.

With flexible, part-time and longer-term opportunities available, this role could be ideal for graduates looking to gain experience before applying for teacher training, a PGCE or a future career in education.

The role will involve:
  • Supporting pupils across Key Stages 3 and 4
  • Assisting teachers with classroom activities and learning tasks
  • Helping students understand lesson instructions and complete their work
  • Providing one-to-one or small-group support where required
  • Encouraging positive behaviour and classroom engagement
  • Supporting pupils who may struggle with confidence or motivation
  • Helping students develop independence and problem-solving skills
  • Building positive and professional relationships with young people
  • Supporting pupils with additional learning needs where appropriate
  • Encouraging pupils to participate in lessons and school activities
  • Helping to maintain a calm, inclusive and positive learning environment
  • Working alongside experienced teachers and support staff
  • Developing practical classroom and communication skills
  • Following school policies, including safeguarding procedures
  • Gaining valuable experience of the secondary education environment
Required Skills and Experience for this Graduate Teaching Assistant role:
  • A degree in any subject is welcomed
  • An interest in teaching, education or working with young people
  • Previous experience working with children or teenagers is desirable but not essential for every opportunity
  • Confident communication and interpersonal skills
  • A positive, proactive and enthusiastic approach
  • Ability to build positive relationships with pupils
  • Patient, approachable and adaptable attitude
  • Confidence working as part of a team
  • Willingness to learn from experienced teaching staff
  • Reliable and professional approach
  • Ability to encourage and motivate young people
  • A genuine interest in supporting pupils' academic and personal development
Working for Flourish Education as a Graduate Teaching Assistant, you will receive:
  • £92.59to £100 per day, equivalent to approximately £18,055 to £19,500 per annum based on five days a week across a full school year
  • Flexible, part-time and longer-term opportunities, depending on school requirements
  • Holiday Pay – for PAYE candidates, 12.07% of your day rate is accrued into your holiday pot
  • Pension Contributions
  • Free KCSIE-compliant Safeguarding and Prevent Duty Training, including modules relating to legislation, FGM and abuse
  • Refer a Friend bonus scheme
  • Regular contact throughout the registration process and once you are working in schools
  • The opportunity to gain practical experience before pursuing teacher training or another education career
  • Support and guidance from your dedicated Flourish Education consultant

The role is easily commutable from Oldbury, Smethwick, Bearwood, Quinton, Harborne, Edgbaston and surrounding areas.

Opportunities may also be accessible from central Birmingham, Halesowen, Selly Oak and nearby parts of the West Midlands.

This could be an ideal opportunity for a Graduate Teaching Assistant, aspiring teacher, with a degree who is looking to gain experience working with young people. Whether you are considering a future PGCE or simply want to explore a career within education, we would love to hear from you.
