Job description

By joining the University of Lancashire, you’ll become part of a thriving community of talent that’s united by a shared vision – to transform the lives of our students and create prosperity and opportunity in the communities we serve. Every colleague has a vital role to play in helping us achieve this vision.

About the role:

The University of Lancashire is seeking an outstanding academic clinician to lead our Bachelor of Dental Surgery (International) (BDSi) programme.

This is an exciting opportunity to join a growing and ambitious School with an excellent reputation for innovation in dental education. We are looking for an experienced dental educator who is passionate about developing future members of the dental profession and who is committed to delivering an outstanding student experience.

As BDSi Course Lead, you will provide strategic and operational leadership for the programme, ensuring the highest standards of academic quality, clinical education and regulatory compliance. Working closely with the Head of Dentistry and the wider academic leadership team, you will lead curriculum delivery and enhancement, support staff and students, and contribute to the continued development of our integrated portfolio of professionally regulated dental programmes.

You will provide academic leadership across learning, teaching and assessment, oversee quality assurance and student progression, and work collaboratively with NHS partners and external stakeholders to ensure graduates continue to meet the standards required by the General Dental Council.

The role includes clinical supervision within our purpose-built Preston Dental Clinic and leadership of teaching teams across our clinical education network. You will also contribute to the School's wider ambitions in research, scholarship and knowledge exchange.

About you:

You will be a General Dental Council registered dentist with significant experience in dental education and academic leadership and a higher degree in a relevant discipline. You will have an excellent understanding of curriculum management, quality assurance and professional regulation, together with a proven ability to lead and motivate teams within a complex educational environment.

You will be an effective communicator who enjoys working collaboratively and building strong relationships with colleagues, students and external partners. You will be passionate about delivering an exceptional student experience and committed to continuous improvement and educational innovation.

You will be primarily based at our Preston campus, but should be willing to travel for University-related business. Placement locations for the international cohort are currently in Preston and Falmouth, and the postholder will be expected to travel to placement locations to support teaching on occasion.

About the School:

The School of Medicine and Dentistry offers an integrated portfolio of undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including Bachelor of Dental Surgery, Bachelor of Dental Surgery (International), Dental Therapy, Clinical Dental Technology, Dental Technology Apprenticeships, Orthodontic Therapy Apprenticeships and a growing range of postgraduate and continuing professional development programmes.

Our purpose-built facilities include modern simulation suites, dedicated clinical teaching spaces and the Preston Dental Clinic. Students also gain extensive experience across our Dental Education Centres and partner clinical placements throughout Lancashire, providing outstanding opportunities to develop their skills while improving access to dental care in areas of significant need.

As part of the School of Medicine and Dentistry, colleagues benefit from close collaboration with medicine and other healthcare professions, creating opportunities for interdisciplinary education, research and innovation.

Use of AI in applications:

We want to understand your genuine interest in the role and artificial intelligence can be a useful tool to support your application. However, all examples and statements provided must be truthful, factually accurate and taken directly from your own experience and the written elements of your application should accurately reflect your own communication style. Applications that rely too heavily on AI tools can appear generic and lack the detail we need to assess your skills and experience.

What we can offer you:

We have a fantastic package of rewards and lifestyle benefits – from an attractive annual leave entitlement to access to a comprehensive employee benefits platform which includes a 24/7 online GP.

Our people are our most important asset. We’ll encourage you to make the most of your talents and continually develop your skills and knowledge. As well as realising your career ambitions, you’ll be making a positive difference to other people’s lives.

About us:

We are proud to be a diverse, multicultural university. We are committed to building a truly inclusive culture where diversity is championed. Applications are particularly welcomed from individuals who will support the diversification within the University and support its development of a culture that is inclusive and welcoming to all.
