To provide effective dietetic treatment for a delegated caseload of in-patients and out-patients at the Great Western Hospital. The role involves assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of evidence-based, individualized patient care. The post holder will contribute to the development of standards of care and continue their professional development.

Responsibilities include:
  • Providing a service to inpatients and outpatients with support from senior dietitians and dietetic assistants.
  • Developing the dietetic service across various inpatient wards, including general medical, stroke, and surgical wards.
  • Managing appropriate patient referrals from ward areas using local protocols.
  • Managing patients fed enterally within their caseload, including during periods of cover, calculating nutritional requirements, and recommending suitable products and administration methods.
  • Monitoring biochemical statuses regularly to ensure proper nutrition.
  • Providing educational sessions to patient groups such as those in cardiac rehabilitation, diabetes, stroke, overweight, and rheumatoid arthritis.

Additional responsibilities:
  • Liaising with other professionals such as social care teams, GPs, consultants, carers, patients, and relatives.
  • Assimilating complex information to give appropriate advice to patients.
  • Using behavior change techniques, including active listening and motivational interviewing, to support dietary and lifestyle changes.
  • Providing MUST and other nutrition training to health professionals.
  • Keeping up-to-date with current practices through literature review.
