Job description

To provide effective dietetic treatment for a delegated caseload of in-patients and out-patients at the Great Western Hospital. The post holder is responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery, and evaluation of evidence-based, individualized patient care within their role boundaries. They will contribute to the ongoing development of care standards and continue their own professional development.

Key Responsibilities:
  1. Provide services to inpatients and outpatients with support from senior dietitians and dietetic assistants.
  2. Develop and manage the dietetic service across various inpatient wards, including general medical, stroke, and surgical units.
  3. Manage appropriately referred patients from ward areas using local protocols.
  4. Handle patients requiring enteral feeding within their caseload, including during cover periods, calculating nutritional requirements, and recommending suitable products and administration methods via naso-gastric or gastrostomy tubes.
  5. Monitor individual biochemical statuses regularly to ensure correct nutritional intake.
  6. Deliver educational sessions to patient groups such as those in cardiac rehabilitation, diabetes, stroke, overweight patients, and those with rheumatoid arthritis.

Additional Responsibilities:
  1. Collaborate with social care teams, GPs, consultants, carers, patients, and relatives as required.
  2. Assimilate complex information to provide appropriate advice to each patient.
  3. Use behavior change techniques, including active listening, motivation, and negotiation, to support patients with dietary and lifestyle changes, overcoming barriers.
  4. Provide nutrition training such as MUST to other health professionals, including doctors and nursing staff.
  5. Stay updated with current practices through regular literature review.
