Bank Band 5 Dietitian

To provide effective dietetic treatment for a delegated caseload of in-patients and out-patients at the Great Western Hospital. They are responsible for the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of evidence based individualised patient care within the boundaries of their role. The post holder will contribute to the continuing development of standards of care. The postholder will be expected to continue with their own professional development.

Main duties of the job

1. To provide a service to inpatients and outpatients with support provided by senior dietitians and dietetic assistant.

2. To undertake and develop the dietetic service for a number of in-patient wards, including general medical, stroke and surgical.

3. To be responsible for managing appropriate patients referred from ward areas, using local protocols

4. To be responsible for patients fed enterally within own caseload, including periods of cover. To calculate patient requirements and ensure these are met by recommending specialised products and the appropriate administration of these via naso-gastric or gastrostomy tubes.

5. To regularly monitor individual biochemical status regularly to ensure correct nutrition received.

6. To provide education sessions to a variety of patient groups such as cardiac rehabilitation, diabetes, stroke, overweight patients and patients with rheumatoid arthritis.

Job responsibilities

1. To liaise with other relevant professionals such as Social care teams, GPs, Consultants, carers and individual patients and relatives as required.

2. The dietitian must assimilate a large amount of highly complex information in order give the appropriate advice to each patient

3. The dietitian will use behaviour change techniques including active listening, motivational and negotiating skills to support patients with difficult dietary and lifestyle changes as well as helping them to recognise and overcome any barriers to these changes.

4. To provide MUST and other nutrition training to other health professionals including doctors, staff nurses and nursing auxiliaries.

5. To keep practice up to date with new developments in practice by regular review of current literature.

Qualifications
  • Degree or post graduate diploma in Dietetics or Nutrition & Dietetics
  • Registration by the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC)
  • Member of British Dietetic Association
  • Member of relevant BDA special interest group (e.g. PEN Group, community Group)
  • CPD relevant to elements of post e.g. nutrition support
Experience
  • Supervised dietetic placement - evidence of B & C placements or recent band 5 experience
  • Recent experience of working with MUST (or similar)
