Main duties of the job
1. Job purpose
- To assist in the provision of an efficient radiology service.
- To work as part of a multi-disciplinary imaging team providing a high-quality diagnostic service.
- To provide high-quality, safe, effective and patient centred care.
- To develop and improve professional expertise via continuous professional development (CPD).
Key areas of responsibility
3.1. CLINICAL PRACTICE
- To carry out radiographic examinations across a range of modalities to the agreed standard of the department.
- Complete high-quality examinations consistent with ALARA principles.
- To maintain a high standard of patient care and comfort and be patient focused at all times.
- To work in an efficient and effective manner at all times.
- To plan, prioritise and organise own workload.
- To vet request forms for validity and appropriateness.
- To evaluate the quality of imaging acquired and determine whether repeat or additional acquisitions are required.
- To undertake intravenous cannulation and administration of medicines in line with departmental policy.
- To report any untoward incidents and equipment failure to the relevant modality lead radiographer and where appropriate medical physics expert.
- To report incidents or near misses via the DATIX system and to report defective equipment as soon as possible.
- To work unsupervised as and when required.
- To work using own initiative but be aware own limitations and seek guidance when necessary.
- To work flexibly based on requirements of service.
- Contribute to minimising hospital-acquired infections.
- To carry out duties which may be considered necessary and consistent with the responsibilities of the post.
3.2 COMMUNICATION
- To liaise and communicate effectively with other staff both within and external to the department regarding patient care and ensure that effective communication is implemented and maintained.
- To maintain close and appropriate communication with patients, where appropriate, to optimise their experience and comfort in utilising imaging services.
- To keep accurate records of patient examinations in line with departmental protocols.
- To be familiar with the Imaging IT systems and to ensure all examinations have been recorded and archived as expected.
4. GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
4.1 LEADERSHIP
- To deputise for more senior radiographers as and when required, providing continuity of service.
- To supervise junior members of staff to help expand their knowledge and skills.
- To exhibit role model type behaviours, such as appearing on duty promptly and appropriately dressed and behaving in a professional manner at all times.
- To motivate members of the team and provide reassurance and guidance.
- To highlight any process or issue that may impact patient safety to their line manager.
4.2 EDUCATION
- To undertake any formal or informal training required to fulfil the needs of the post including all mandatory training in line with Trust and Department policies.
- To expand and update your own technical and professional skills.
- To assist in the clinical instruction and assessment of student radiographers.
- To provide mentorship, guidance and support to fellow radiographers within the trust.
- To participate in the departmental appraisal system.
- To supervise other staff undertaking intravenous cannulation and medicines administration.
- To participate in and fully contribute to departmental and professional activities such as audit, participation in policy/process production and taking an active interest in patient safety initiatives.
- To undertake continuous professional development in line with Society and College of Radiographers guidelines and Health and Care Professions Council standards of proficiency.
4.3 RESEARCH AND CLINICAL GOVERNANCE
- To be actively involved in the department audit and quality assurance programme.
- To have a good understanding of research terminology and practices.
- To maintain a good awareness and application of research informed practice.
4.4 OTHER DUTIES
- To participate in the departmental out of hours rotation including weekend, evening and night shifts.
- To rotate through the modalities offered on site as the department requires.
- To observe the IRR 2017 and IR (ME) R 2017 regulations along with other relevant legislation, codes of conduct and local rules relating to imaging modalities.

Qualifications Essential
- BSc(Hons) Radiography, DCR(D) Diploma of the College of Radiographers or equivalent (E)
- Health and Care Professions Council Registration (E)
- Evidence of career-long commitment to CPD (E)
- Student Clinical Assessors Course (D)
- College of Radiographers or equivalent accredited IV cannulation course (E)
- Postgraduate study in a relevant area (D)
- Understanding of factors affecting service throughput and quality.
- Completion of preceptorship (E)
- PgC/PgD or MSc in relevant clinical modality (D)
Experience Essential
- Up to date knowledge of relevant modality imaging techniques (E)
- Awareness of clinical governance issues in relation to patient care (E)
- Experience of working unsupervised (E)
- Experience of, and proactiveness in, training staff and students (E)
- Experience of working within the NHS (E)
- Significant Post-graduate experience commensurate with grade/role (E)
- Experience in modalities other than X-ray & Fluoroscopy (D)
- Previous experience as Band 5 radiographer (E)
- Experience of on-call and out-of-hours roster (E)
