Job description

The Care Teams are the heart of our organisation, consisting of dedicated nurses, healthcare assistants, and support staff. They provide compassionate and personalised care to children with life-limiting conditions, focusing on pain management, symptom control, and emotional support for both the child and their family. The Care Teams work closely with medical professionals to ensure holistic care is tailored to each child's needs.

Main duties of the job

Be a professional role model, leading and coordinating the in-house hospice team to provide safe, high-quality care to children, young people, and their families.

Take responsibility and accountability for shift management and organisation of the in-hospice care, managing a wide range of complex and sometimes conflicting priorities.

Provide nursing advice organisation-wide to support and facilitate high-quality, individualised care to children, young people, and families in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team.

Take responsibility for standards of cleanliness within the clinical area during your shift.

Facilitate the development of all junior staff within the team.

Provide an innovative and progressive attitude to the continual improvement of child/young person care through research and evidence-based practice.

Undertake delegated responsibility for the hospice in the absence of the Lead Nurses.

Be part of the Clinical On-Call Rota (Providing out-of-hours support for the In-House Team).

Shooting Star Children's Hospices provides specialist care and support to families who have a baby, child, or young person with a life-limiting condition, or who have been bereaved. Rated Outstanding by the Care Quality Commission, we support families across Surrey, north-west London, and south-west London from diagnosis to end of life and throughout bereavement with a range of nursing, practical, emotional, and medical care.

Our specialist care and support are free of charge to families and available 24/7. It includes specialist nursing in the community, symptom management and pain relief, overnight respite stays, end-of-life care, specialist bereavement care, and a comprehensive range of therapies, groups, and clinics for the whole family.

At the heart of what we do are our dedicated staff; their exceptional commitment and professionalism mean every family has the opportunity to make every moment count.

It costs £10 million a year to run Shooting Star Children's Hospices. Just 30% of our funding comes from the government, so we rely on our supporters' generosity to keep the service running. We employ 175 staff, including 98 nursing and medical staff, supporting around 700 families.

a) Main purpose of job in delivering our strategy

b) Main duties and key responsibilities

CLINICAL:

Ensure each child/young person is assessed, and their care is planned, implemented, and evaluated in collaboration with the family, with accurate documentation and up-to-date records.

Liaise with clinical, non-clinical, and facilities staff to maintain a safe, friendly, and welcoming environment for children, families, visitors, and staff.

Act as an advocate for the child/young person and family, ensuring provision of appropriate information and support services.

Ensure effective communication within the multidisciplinary team, with parents, relatives, visitors, and external agencies.

Develop and monitor clinical and non-clinical performance standards with the Lead Nurses, taking appropriate action as needed.

Maintain cleanliness and infection control standards within the clinical area, escalating issues as necessary.

Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge to provide holistic, evidence-based nursing care, including completion of Shooting Star care competencies.

Ensure staff use equipment safely, understanding its uses, safety precautions, handling, cleaning, and maintenance.

Be competent in the use of relevant IT systems, ensuring accurate and timely data entry in accordance with SSCH policy and procedure.

Participate in the on-call rota.

MANAGERIAL:

Provide supervision and support to care team members.

Support effective communication across services, team members, families, and visitors.

Lead specific management responsibilities as allocated.

Ensure quality care by adhering to hospice standards and informing seniors of any issues.

Manage resources effectively, including staffing, bed management, and equipment utilization.

Participate in clinical audits, risk management, incident reporting, and safety initiatives.

Ensure staff access and adhere to policies and procedures, complying with Care Quality Commission standards and legal requirements such as the Mental Capacity Act.

Work closely with Lead Nurses to cover absences and undertake projects as assigned.

Participate in events or publications promoting Shooting Star and pediatric palliative care.

EDUCATIONAL:

Assist in education and training of students, junior staff, and multidisciplinary team members through formal and informal teaching.

Provide mentorship and supervision for students and new staff, acting as a preceptor.

Participate in clinical audits and research, presenting findings and contributing to publications.

Maintain own professional development and mandatory training.

PROFESSIONAL:

Maintain confidentiality at all times.

Ensure documentation is accurate, complete, and timely, in line with NMC, CQC, and SSCH standards.

Act professionally, adhering to the NMC Code of Conduct.

Participate in appraisals, staff development, and training activities.

Identify own learning needs and pursue ongoing professional development.

Undertake additional training and qualifications as relevant.

c) Other Requirements

Willingness to work in both hospices and attend meetings across different locations, including evenings and weekends.

Application for an Enhanced DBS check is required.

Reside within 60 minutes of Christophers due to on-call duties.

d) Mandatory Criteria

Other duties as required for effective operation.

Adherence to professional codes of conduct, health and safety policies, and mandatory training.
