Job summary

A Band 6 vacancy has arisen in the Woodland Neonatal Unit, Watford. The Woodland Neonatal Unit at Watford Hospital is a busy local neonatal unit (LNU) within the East of England Neonatal network. The unit admits babies requiring intensive care, high dependency, and special care. Additionally, we manage a 6-bedded Transitional Care Unit in the postnatal ward. We are committed to providing high-quality, evidence-based practice to meet the needs of parents and babies, incorporating family-centered care.

We are seeking a part-time Band 6 Neonatal Nurse on a fixed-term one-year contract who wishes to work with our well-established, friendly neonatal team to deliver the highest standards of neonatal care.

Main duties of the job

The post holder should have expertise in working with complex cases requiring intensive support and possess excellent clinical knowledge.

The successful applicant will work autonomously, managing clinical risks appropriately during practice, with guidance from other professionals when necessary.

The role requires experience, knowledge, and skills in working in a neonatal unit at a senior level. Previous Band 6 or management experience is desirable.

The successful candidate will lead and coordinate shifts, work well independently and within the team, and support junior staff and pre-registration student nurses.

Job responsibilities

The post holder will:

  • Assess care needs, develop, implement, and evaluate care programs independently.
  • Regularly take charge of the Neonatal unit, act as shift coordinator, and undertake designated management roles.
  • Actively promote practice development and foster a learning environment.
  • Provide clinical, educational, and emotional support to parents and carers.
  • Provide clear clinical leadership, deputising for the Senior Sister/Charge Nurse in her/his absence.
Person Specification
Education and qualifications
  • Registered Nurse (RGN/Midwife/Child) with NMC registration
  • Current NLS certification
  • Teaching and assessing qualification and/or mentorship module; Safeguarding Children training (Level 1-3)
  • Evidence of ongoing professional development
  • Leadership and management certification
  • Degree in Children's or Neonatal Nursing
Knowledge
  • Deep neonatal nursing knowledge, integrating theory and practice
  • Handling complaints and clinical incidents
  • Risk management and health and safety awareness
  • Safeguarding children
  • Audit processes, reporting, and action planning
  • Current research developments in neonatal care
  • Active involvement in research and audit
  • Knowledge of the Neonatal network
Experience
  • Previous experience at Band 6 level, including shift leading/nurse in charge roles
