Job summary

University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Band 3 Healthcare Assistant to join the Community Respiratory Team. You will support high-quality respiratory care in community and outpatient settings, assisting with spirometry and diagnostic testing while maintaining accurate records.

You will work within a multidisciplinary team, travel across community sites, and develop specialist respiratory skills through formal training and competency assessments.

Qualifications

Experience or training in respiratory physiology measurement techniques.

Job Summary

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a motivated and compassionate Band 3 Healthcare Assistant to join the Community Respiratory Team at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust.

This role offers the opportunity to support the delivery of high-quality respiratory care across a range of community, outpatient and healthcare settings, working alongside specialist nurses, physiotherapists, consultants and the wider multidisciplinary team. You will play an important role in supporting patients with respiratory conditions and assisting in the delivery of respiratory diagnostics and assessments.

The successful candidate will be passionate about patient care, keen to learn new skills, adaptable to different working environments and committed to supporting patients to achieve the best possible health outcomes.

Main Duties, Tasks & Skills Required

Supporting the delivery of high-quality, patient-centred respiratory care across a variety of community and outpatient settings.
Assisting with respiratory diagnostic investigations, including spirometry and FeNO testing.
Undertaking clinical observations following appropriate training and competency assessment.
Supporting patients to access respiratory assessment and treatment services.
Maintaining accurate patient records and clinical documentation.
Assisting with equipment checks, stock management and infection prevention measures.
Working collaboratively as part of a multidisciplinary respiratory team.
Contributing to service development, quality improvement initiatives and audits.

A key element of this role is likely to include supporting respiratory diagnostic services. Successful candidates must be committed to undertaking specialist training and competency development in respiratory diagnostics, including spirometry. This training forms an essential part of the role and provides an excellent opportunity to develop specialist knowledge and skills within respiratory care. A willingness to attend training and participate in ongoing professional development is essential.

Therapy Services deliver care across a range of hospital, community and outpatient settings. The successful candidate will be expected to work flexibly across locations. The role requires a flexible approach to working practices and a willingness to adapt to changing service requirements.

NVQ Level 3, Healthcare Science Assistant qualification, ARTP Performing Only certification, or equivalent relevant knowledge / competency gained through training and experience.
Evidence of role-specific competency, or willingness to complete competency-based training, to undertake protocol-led spirometry and associated respiratory measurements.

Desirable

Experience or training in respiratory physiology measurement techniques.
Relevant healthcare support worker qualification or equivalent experience.
Training in infection prevention, quality control or diagnostic equipment processes.
