Optime Group is recruiting experienced Baggage Handlers / Ramp Agents for Gatwick Airport. The role offers full-time hours, overtime opportunities, and a clear progression path from BHU to Ramp with pay increases.

You will be required to work outdoors and indoors, lift up to 30 kg, and operate airport equipment. A full UK manual driving licence and ADP are essential, with 5-week BHU and rotating 5-on/3-off shifts.

Responsibilities

• Operate equipment such as mobile stairs, belt loaders, and tugs as trained.
• Will spend initial weeks in BHU before upskilling to Ramp with pay progression.
• Obtain Airside Driving Permit (ADP) if not already held.

Job description

Aviation Recruitment experts Optime are searching for an experienced Baggage Handlers / Ramp Agents to join a well-respected and successful client at Gatwick Airport. This job offers full time hours and overtime opportunities. This is a very enjoyable role with a great company providing fantastic conditions and facilities.

• Rate of pay: £16.01 per hour (increasing to £18.78 per hour, after a successful completion of 12 months employment)

Confirmed start dates:

• 18th January 2027
• 1st February 2027

Key Duties:

• Process customer luggage for aircraft loading and unloading, ensuring proper weight distribution.

• You are required to spend a minimum of 4 weeks in the BHU, after which you will be upskilled to Ramp where you will remain. A further upskill after 2 months within the ramp and an increase in rate of pay after 12 months.
• Work airside and in the under croft (baggage unit). Please note that you will be working in confined spaces.
• Collaborate with ramp agents, ground handling staff, and airline personnel for efficient airport operations.
• Multi-skilled position with opportunities for upskilling and operating various vehicles and machinery such as: mobile stair units for passenger boarding, belt loaders, buggies transporting passenger luggage and tug vehicles to help the aircraft prepare for take-off.
• This is a manual role; you will need to be physically fit and able to repetitively lift and move luggage up to 30KG in weight (there will be downtime between arrivals/departures).
• Obtain your ADP (Airside Driving Permit).
• Please note this role takes place both indoor and outdoor and you will experience all weather conditions.

Shifts:

The Airport is operational 7 days per week and candidates will be working on a 5 on 3 off rolling rota and you will need to be fully flexible with the days and hours you can work. Please note, your shifts can start as early as 03:00am. This could be subject to change!

• Day 1: 03:00AM to 13:30PM
• Day 2: 04:00AM to 13:30PM
• Day 3: 04:00AM to 13:30PM
• Day 4: 11:30AM to 21:00PM
• Day 5: 12:00PM to 21:00PM

Requirements:

• Full Manual UK Driving Licence.
• Good attention to detail.
• Good verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently and use initiative, while being part of a team.
• Right to Work in the UK.
• Five year fully checkable reference history to be completed prior to your start date.
• Ability to pass Criminal Record Check (CRC).
