Job summary

Genomics England is seeking a Backend Python Software Engineer to help build scalable backend services and cloud-native applications on AWS for genomic testing, clinical decision making and research at national scale.

You will join the RE Platform team, contributing to the URD service and the National Genomic Research Library ecosystem, collaborating across databases, microservices and identity management solutions.

Qualifications

• Experience building scalable backend services in Python.
• Experience with AWS and microservice architectures.
• Experience designing, developing and consuming REST APIs.
• Experience with relational databases and SQL (ideally AWS RDS).
• Experience integrating with identity providers (e.g., Okta).
• Familiarity with agile methodologies and test driven development.

Responsibilities

• Backend Software Development and Design.
• Develop scalable, high-quality Python code following best practices.
• Design and maintain microservices hosted on AWS.
• Design, develop and maintain REST APIs for internal and external integrations.
• Work with relational databases, including AWS RDS and SQL-based solutions.
• Support identity and access management integrations (Okta/IdPs).
• Build and enhance test automation frameworks.
• Troubleshoot and support issues during development and testing.
• Collaborate with front-end, QA and Platform Engineers.
• Lead feature development across the team.
