Job summary

Tesco UK is building a next-generation fulfilment platform and seeks a Backend Engineer (SDE2) to join a globally distributed Java team. You will develop scalable backend services, APIs, and microservices to optimize fulfilment workflows and support live operations.

The role emphasizes collaboration with product managers and engineers, code quality, DevOps practices, and mentoring junior engineers. You will own features end-to-end and help raise the team’s technical bar.

Qualifications

• Experience building and operating backend Java services in distributed systems.
• Familiarity with agile methodologies and DevOps practices.
• Ability to design, develop and deploy backend components or services.
• Experience collaborating with engineers across distributed teams.

Responsibilities

• Build scalable, resilient Java-based backend services and APIs.
• Ship end-to-end stories, with frontend focus and backend integration.
• Take ownership of medium-sized features and contribute to design and delivery.
• Collaborate with engineers, product managers, and stakeholders to solve problems.
• Write clean, maintainable code and participate in peer reviews to raise quality.
• Mentor junior engineers and share knowledge across the team.
• Contribute to improving development processes and standards.
