Job summary

Genomics England is seeking a Platform Engineer to join its AWS Cloud Platform Team. You will design, build and optimise our cloud platform with automation using Terraform, Ansible, and GitLab CI/CD, helping ensure scalable, secure, and reliable cloud services.

The role sits in the Cloud Platform Team as part of a larger Cloud Centre of Excellence. It offers a blended working model, a competitive benefits package, and a mission‑critical environment within healthcare data stewardship.

Qualifications

• Minimum 2 years' experience as a Platform Engineer, Cloud Engineer or similar role within a DevOps environment.
• A minimum of 2 years' commercial experience with AWS.
• A minimum of 2 years' experience with Terraform for infrastructure automation.
• Familiarity with automation tools such as Ansible, Chef, or Puppet.
• Understanding of cloud governance principles, including cost optimisation, tagging strategies, and security best practices in multi-account AWS environments.

Responsibilities

• Collaborate with a DevOps team to drive automation, efficiency, and continuous improvement.
• Provide in-hours support to Platform Engineers with day-to-day changes to codebase.
• Own and enhance cloud-based infrastructure on AWS for scalability, security, and reliability.
• Develop, maintain, and optimise CI/CD pipelines using GitLab CI/CD, Terraform and Ansible.
• Implement Infrastructure as Code to automate deployments and reduce manual effort.
• Contribute to cloud governance frameworks including security, cost management, and compliance policies across teams.
• Build reusable platform components, templates, and standards to accelerate delivery.
• Monitor system performance, identify issues, and introduce automation for resilience.
• Troubleshoot platform issues to ensure minimal downtime.
• Influence engineering decisions in a collaborative culture.
