Job summary

London Luton Airport Operations Ltd is seeking a dedicated Aviation Firefighter on a 12‑month fixed-term contract to carry out rescue and firefighting duties at Luton Airport and beyond the boundary. You will respond to reported incidents, administer first aid if required, and maintain the readiness of emergency response equipment as part of the Emergency Fire Service.

Qualifications

Job description

Department: Firefighting & Rescue Service

Reports to: Station Manager

Overall objective of the post:

The successful applicant for this 12-month fixed-term contract will carry out rescue and firefighting duties and will respond to reported incidents at Luton Airport and outside the Airport boundary. This will involve taking appropriate action in line with procedures to preserve life and minimise damage to property. You will also be expected to administer medical care if required.

The successful candidate will have aviation firefighting experience (Civil Aviation Authority - CAA approved certification) with an aptitude and an ability to develop the skills, and commitment to work as part of the team. You will be medically fit in accordance with current medical and fitness standards for Firefighters, and able to undertake regular theoretical and practical training. You will also display a flexible attitude, have well-developed communication skills, and can work within a closely-knit team environment are essential qualities.

Reporting to the Watch Manager and carrying out the day-to-day activities to maintain a fully effective Emergency Fire Service in order to save life protect property in line with company standards and licensing requirements. Working daily to maintain competence within the CAP699 MOC process.

Job purpose summary:

To provide and assist in the provision of the Fire Fighting and Rescue Services on behalf of Luton Airport.

To act as an integral part of an emergency response team at an International Airport.

Work with the airport to educate and deliver Fire Safety to the benefit of all employees and guests.

Key responsibilities and accountabilities:

• To assist in aircraft incidents involving rescue and/or firefighting to affect control or containment of the incident.
• To respond to any emergencies involving aircraft during the operational hours of the Airport as required.
• To assist in rescue and/or firefighting involving Airport premises and/or property.
• To render humanitarian assistance including First Aid for any incidents off the airfield as required by the Officer in Charge (e.g. road traffic accidents).
• To assist in firefighting involving fires off the airfield as required by the Officer in Charge.
• To assist in fire prevention duties within the Airport premises, including testing of fire alarm systems and evacuations.
• Ensure that all emergency response vehicles and equipment are maintained in good working order and ready for immediate use.
• Carry out Emergency Response vehicle and equipment checks.
• To respond and attend emergency first aid incidents on and around the airfield.
• Report on discovery any faults that would preclude the operational availability of any vehicle or item of emergency response equipment and facilitate timely repair/replacement.
• To carry out special service requests (E.g., fuel spillages and refuelling standby) as required.
• Ensure all equipment is maintained, serviced and fit for purpose.
• To attend training courses if required to ensure competencies are always maintained.
• To assist in fire training and present information and demonstrations to support fire safety.
• To escort visitors around the Airport Fire Station or Airfield.
• To take part in ongoing technical and practical training within the airport as required.
• To perform duties in the Airport Fire Service watch room as per the established procedures.
• To contribute to the general good housekeeping of the Fire Station.
• To complete reports and fire station records as required.
• Firefighters will be expected to display high performance standards, and these will be measured against their role map. This will be done through Personal Development Reviews (PDR) and against their Knowledge Performance Indicators (KPI’s).
• To gain and complete assessor assessment and teaching qualifications.
• Contribute to delivering a great guest experience by performing your role with accuracy and efficiency. Recognising that every task, whether guest-facing or behind the scenes, contributes to supporting the company’s overall LLA Way Strategy and service standards.
• Proactively and positively promote the LLA Way initiatives and projects with all employees and the wider airport community.
• Other roles include de-icing and snow clearance of taxiways and runway, escorting contractors working on taxiways and runways.
• Carry out airfield snow clearing and de-icing duties to ensure a safe environment for aircraft and ensure best practise and competencies are maintained according to operating procedures.
• To assist in the clearing of runway, taxiways and apron area (e.g., foreign object debris (FOD), snow etc.).
• Be competent in using and carrying out braking action assessments and runway friction monitoring, using the specialist Grip tester equipment when required.
• To qualify in Technical Instructional Qualification and equipment maintenance courses as required to ensuring station and watching requirements. e.g.: - BA, PTI, Grip tester, Extinguisher, Fire Prevention, fire aid, Fire warden, airline training and any other Course as required.
• To be trained in and deliver any training course to internal and external airport employees and non-airport personnel as required as part of fire service duties.
• To carry out hot work permit inspections as required.

Knowledge, skills and experience

Qualifications

Hold a valid certificate of competence in the role of Aviation Firefighter from an accredited training provider or be able to provide evidence that competence has been maintained through assessment and competency checks.

Local authority fire service relevant qualifications.

First aid and advance first aid certificate.

Must be 18 or over.

Must be medically fit in compliance with medical policy requirements.

CAA firefighter qualification in Aviation and preferably an HGV and FREC medical qualification.

Teaching & Assessors Qualification (or other nationally recognised trainer qualification,) where necessary.

Technical Instructional Qualification - Maintain and develop specialisms within their role through continuous professional development.

NEBOSH Certificate.

Experience

Experience of Aviation or Local authority fire service, preferably with a civil or military background.

Knowledge

Firefighters are expected to abide and have knowledge of the National Occupational Standards in force at the time as contained within their role map.

Skills

Great communication skills, both verbal and written.

Ability to convey information correctly and accurately.

Ability to work under pressure.

Ability to work effectively as a team member.

Strong interpersonal skills.

Ability to wear self-contained breathing apparatus and work in confined spaces.

General

Must demonstrate all personal qualities as laid down in the National Personal Qualities & Attributes (PQA).

Undertake duties that fall within the firefighter role.

Be self-disciplined and self- motivated.

Comfortable to work 24 hour shifts.

Be available for standby duties on a watch rota, to cover Station manning deficiencies as and when required.

Be available to provide cover for fire service and associated training courses as and when required.
