Job summary

Bennet & Game Recruitment represents a well-established Liverpool-based accountancy practice seeking an Audit Manager. You will lead audits from planning through to completion, manage client relationships across SME and not-for-profit sectors, and develop a team of 3–4 staff.

The role offers a clear pathway to RI status with involvement in business development, pitches, and due diligence projects within a collaborative firm environment.

Qualifications

• ACA or ACCA qualification is required.
• Proven experience at Audit Manager level within a UK practice.
• Strong knowledge of UK auditing standards and accounting rules.
• Experience supervising junior staff and managing multiple audits.
• Not-for-profit or SME audit experience desirable; SRA Accounts Rules reviews a bonus.

Responsibilities

• Manage audit engagements from planning to completion.
• Main contact for a diverse client portfolio (SME/owner-managed, not-for-profit, professional practices).
• Line manage a 3–4 person team and develop staff.
• Review audit work to ensure UK standards compliance.
• Support business development, pitches and tender processes.
• Identify opportunities within existing relationships and promote firm growth.
• Contribute to ad hoc projects (due diligence, complex accounting).
• Support audit quality control processes and work with senior leadership toward RI role.

Our client is a well-established and growing independent accountancy practice based in Liverpool, operating across the North West. The firm has a strong reputation for delivering high-quality audit, accounting, and advisory services to a broad client base, with particular expertise in SME/owner-managed businesses and the not-for-profit sector. With a collaborative culture and clear succession planning in place, this is a key strategic hire aimed at strengthening and developing the firm's audit function.

Role Overview - Audit Manager

The successful candidate will play a central role in managing audit engagements, developing client relationships, and contributing to the growth of the audit department.

• Managing and delivering audit assignments from planning through to completion
• Acting as the main point of contact for a varied client portfolio, including SME/owner-managed businesses, not-for-profit organisations, and professional practices
• Line managing and developing a team of 3-4 staff members
• Reviewing audit work and ensuring compliance with UK auditing standards
• Taking an active role in business development, including:
• Supporting pitches and tender processes
• Identifying opportunities within existing client relationships
• Building commercial awareness and visibility within the firm
• Assisting with ad hoc projects including due diligence assignments and complex accounting issues
• Supporting the firm's audit quality control processes
• Working closely with senior leadership with the aim of stepping into an RI role in the short term

Role Requirements - Audit Manager

• ACA or ACCA qualified
• Proven experience operating at Audit Manager level within a UK practice
• Strong knowledge of UK auditing and accounting standards
• Background in general practice with experience managing multiple audits concurrently
• Experience supervising and developing junior team members
• Exposure to not-for-profit or SME audit work is highly desirable
• Experience with SRA Accounts Rules reviews would be an advantage, but not essential

Salary & Benefits - Audit Manager

• Salary: £50,000- £60,000 (depending on experience)
• Working hours: 9:00am - 5:00pm (office-based role in Liverpool)
