The Role
The Associate Professor role within the Department of Graphic Design involves teaching, research, and knowledge exchange responsibilities. The role requires significant leadership and management skills, working closely with the Head of Department, Course Leaders, Year Group Coordinators, Module Leaders, and Visiting Lecturers. Candidates with a focus on teaching will be innovators in learning practice, promoting new and effective teaching methods across the Department, Institution, and beyond. Those focusing on research and knowledge transfer will support departmental research domains, develop research opportunities, bids, and collaborate with the School Director of Research.
The Associate Professor will collaborate with the Head of Department on departmental vision, staff development, and appraisal processes. The BA Graphic Design course features a significant Student Exchange Programme supported by ‘Turing Funding’. The successful candidate will establish new external links, support course recruitment, partnerships, studios/employers, and develop new courses.
Initial responsibilities include Year and Module Leadership, ensuring compliance with university regulations, policies, procedures, and the Academic Framework. The role promotes innovation in learning, teaching, assessment (LTA), and initiatives in Future Skills and interdisciplinary work. The role also involves fostering a culture of continuous improvement in collaboration with departmental and faculty leadership, industry experts, and alumni.
The Person
The ideal candidate will have a strong enthusiasm for Graphic Design and substantial practical experience in the field. They will have extensive experience in teaching and managing Graphic Design educational programs or courses, demonstrating strong organizational and interpersonal skills. The candidate should be capable of developing and supporting emerging discipline practices and future-facing pedagogy.
Applicants should have significant professional experience as a designer or hold a doctorate in Graphic Design. A teaching qualification and UKPSF recognition (or the ability to obtain it within the probation period) are desirable. Experienced teachers may achieve recognition through the Kingston Academic Practice Standards Framework.
