The laboratory in Bristol is situated within the Severn Pathology suite of laboratories at North Bristol NHS Trust Southmead site. The laboratory receives over 1 million specimens annually from various clinical specialties across Bristol and Bath hospital trusts, offering a diverse workload.

Job Summary

The role involves learning and maintaining good laboratory practices, supporting biomedical investigations, and becoming a valuable team member. The ideal candidate should have a keen interest in science, with desirable experience in clinical microbiology laboratories, complex equipment use, and safety protocols.

Main Duties
  1. Participate in diagnostic services, ensuring reliable and reproducible results.
  2. Analyze patient samples following laboratory protocols, including routine testing under supervision.
  3. Calibrate and maintain laboratory equipment, complete checklists.
  4. Maintain records of analyses and quality control procedures.
  5. Assist Biomedical Scientists, plan work, and suggest improvements.
  6. Prepare and dispatch samples, record data, perform clerical tasks.
  7. Engage in research or development projects.
  8. Train and supervise staff within the department where appropriate.
  9. Participate in ongoing personal development and safety procedures.
  10. Undertake other duties as required.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
  • Experience in a pathology laboratory support role.
  • Familiarity with pathology computer systems.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices.
  • Experience in sample preparation and analysis.
  • Strong communication skills.
  • IT proficiency and accuracy in work.
  • Ability to handle complex equipment.
