Associate General Counsel – Litigation, UK & Lloyd’s

We are seeking an experienced lawyer in insurance coverage litigation to join our collaborative Litigation, UK & Lloyd’s team. The team provides legal advice on first and third-party coverage matters across property, casualty, and specialty lines, supporting AXA XL’s claims counsel capabilities and managing day-to-day legal questions and litigation.

As an Associate General Counsel – Litigation, UK & Lloyd’s, you will advise on a broad range of insurance law issues, handle both contentious and non-contentious matters across jurisdictions, and manage coverage litigation with the claims team. You will report to the Head of Litigation – UK & Lloyd’s and be engaged on a full-time, permanent basis starting as soon as possible.

Responsibilities include:

  1. Developing comprehensive coverage analyses, litigation, and settlement strategies, considering case specifics and overall business impact.
  2. Providing legal advice on regulatory and vendor contracting matters to the Claims organization.
  3. Communicating effectively with stakeholders, including claims handlers and senior management.
  4. Collaborating on litigation management systems and processes.
  5. Managing outside counsel and litigation vendors, developing strategies for settlement, mediation, arbitration, or dispute resolution.
  6. Serving as a subject matter expert, providing legal advice and training internally.
  7. Reporting on case developments and trends to senior management.
  8. Managing high-profile cases and external counsel across various claims-related litigations.
  9. Focusing on individual and portfolio issues, including law/venue choices and policy terms, with a view on exposures and legal opportunities.
  10. Collaborating with UK, US, and Asia-Pac Claims teams and interacting with Underwriting Legal and Policy Wordings teams.
Required Skills and Abilities
  • International coverage experience, including litigation, arbitration, and mediation at a top law firm.
  • Legal credentials: Degree with high academic achievement; solicitor of the Senior Courts of England and Wales or UK barrister.
  • Ability to understand claims facets and apply knowledge strategically.
  • Experience in amending and drafting policy wordings.
  • Strong research and analytical skills, delivering targeted insights quickly.
  • Strategic thinking and leadership skills, including coaching and influencing across a matrixed organization.
  • Excellent drafting, communication, negotiation, and presentation skills.
  • Experience in e-discovery management.
  • Ability to work independently with cross-border teams.
  • Innovative, agile thinker capable of handling complex financial data.
  • Results-driven with a high sense of urgency and standards.
Desired Skills and Abilities
  • Proficiency in another European language (preferred).
  • In-house experience with a specialty (re)insurer and litigation management outside the UK (preferred).
