Assistant Technical Officer
Band 3
Job overview

At present, University Hospitals of North Midlands is unable to offer visa sponsorship for Band 2 to Band 4 roles, as these positions do not meet the minimum salary and skill thresholds required under UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) regulations.

We are seeking to recruit an engineer to support the existing teams working within Clinical Technology. The successful applicant must have an engineering background, ideally with experience in engineering and maintenance. The successful applicant must hold a valid full UK manual driving licence.

The department of Clinical Technology provides a comprehensive medical equipment management and maintenance service to the University Hospital of North Midlands (UHNM) and external healthcare bodies. Based at both the Royal Stoke University Hospital and County Hospital sites, the department consists of multidisciplinary teams of medical engineers, including renal, general medical, imaging, critical care and medical gasses, which provide medical equipment maintenance and support to services across the organisation and to other local healthcare providers.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will support the day‑to‑day operation of the newly established Beds Team within Clinical Technology, contributing to the safe availability, movement, and upkeep of hospital beds and associated equipment across the Trust.

Working under the direction of the Beds Team Leader and senior technical staff, the role will provide practical and logistical support to the beds maintenance service. This will include assisting with the preparation, checking, cleaning coordination, transportation, and return of beds to clinical areas, helping to ensure timely availability and patient safety.

The post holder will support routine checks, basic fault identification, asset labelling, and accurate updating of records on the clinical asset management system, escalating issues promptly to technical staff where required. The role will involve regular interaction with ward and department staff, requiring good communication and a customer‑focused approach.

This role will also contribute to governance by following agreed procedures, supporting audits and stock checks, and maintaining a safe and tidy working environment. Training and supervision will be provided to develop skills and understanding of medical device safety, with the role forming an important foundation within the Beds Team and wider Clinical Technology service.
