Job summary

McTaggart Construction is seeking an experienced Assistant Site Manager to support the delivery of an affordable housing project at our Newbattle site in Dalkeith. In this hands-on role you will work closely with the Site Manager to keep the programme on track, maintain high standards and promote safe, quality delivery on site.

You will coordinate site activities, manage subcontractors, monitor progress, organise inspections and assist with snagging and sign-off.

Qualifications

• Minimum 3 years' on-site experience.
• Knowledge of housebuilding or social housing.
• Understanding of health and safety requirements and site management practices.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Valid SMSTS, CSCS and First Aid qualifications are desirable.
• Full UK driving licence.

Responsibilities

• Support the Site Manager with safe, successful delivery of projects.
• Coordinate site activities, subcontractors, suppliers and direct labour.
• Monitor progress against project programmes and assist with short-term planning.
• Carry out site inspections and quality checks to ensure work meets required standards.
• Produce snagging lists and support the sign-off process for completed works.
• Promote a strong health and safety culture across the site.
• Deliver inductions, toolbox talks and routine safety inspections with site staff and subcontractors.
• Assist with organising materials, plant, equipment and site facilities.
• Record labour levels, progress updates and site information accurately.
• Attend and support progress meetings with subcontractors and suppliers.
• Work with commercial, procurement and technical teams to support project delivery.
• Step in to oversee site operations when required in the absence of the Site Manager.
• Support sustainability and waste management initiatives on site.

• Knowledge of housebuilding, social housing, or general construction projects.
• Understanding of construction health and safety requirements and site management practices.
• Strong communication and organisational skills.
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings and specifications.
• Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
• Valid SMSTS, CSCS Card and First Aid qualifications are desirable.
• Trade background or construction‑related qualification would be advantageous.
• Full UK driving licence.
