Qualifications

• Familiarity with contracts such as JCT or NEC.
• Strong numerical and analytical capabilities.

Job description

We are currently working with a leading UK maintenance and refurbishment contractor who are looking to appoint an Assistant Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team in Slough.

The business specialises in social housing, planned maintenance, refurbishment and property improvement programmes, delivering projects for housing associations and public sector clients.

This is a great opportunity for an Assistant Quantity Surveyor looking to build their commercial experience within the social housing and maintenance sector, working alongside experienced Quantity Surveyors and gaining exposure to the full commercial lifecycle of live contracts.

The Role

As an Assistant Quantity Surveyor, you will support the commercial team across a portfolio of social housing and planned maintenance projects.

You will gain hands-on experience across cost control, valuations, subcontractor management, procurement, variations and final accounts, while working closely with Quantity Surveyors and operational teams.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist with the commercial management of social housing and planned maintenance contracts.
• Support Quantity Surveyors with project budgets, cost control and forecasting.
• Assist with the preparation and submission of valuations and payment applications.
• Monitor project costs and identify potential commercial risks.
• Assist with the assessment and pricing of variations.
• Support subcontractor procurement and management.
• Review subcontractor applications and payments.
• Assist with the preparation and agreement of final accounts.
• Maintain accurate commercial records and project documentation.
• Assist with commercial reporting and cost/value reconciliation.
• Work closely with site and operational teams to ensure commercial information is accurate and up to date.
• Build effective relationships with clients, subcontractors and suppliers.
• Ensure company commercial procedures and contractual requirements are followed.

About You

The successful candidate will have:

• Previous experience in a Quantity Surveying or Assistant Quantity Surveying position.
• Ideally, experience within social housing, planned maintenance, refurbishment, property services or construction.
• An understanding of basic commercial and financial principles.
• Exposure to valuations, variations, procurement and subcontractor management.
• A willingness to develop knowledge of JCT, NEC and other relevant contracts.
• Strong numerical and analytical skills.
• Good communication and organisational skills.
• The ability to work as part of a wider commercial and operational team.
• Good IT skills, particularly Microsoft Excel and Microsoft Office.
• A degree, HNC/HND or equivalent qualification in Quantity Surveying or a related discipline is desirable.
