About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Section Engineer to join our Major Projects team at the iconic Old Oak Common development in London.

HS2's new c. £1 billion Old Oak Common station will become the UK's best-connected rail station upon completion. Our Balfour Beatty VINCI SYTRA joint venture will handle the design, construction, and commissioning of the station in Northwest London.

The station will feature six underground platforms and up to eight on the adjacent Great Western Main Line, providing high-speed rail services to the Midlands, central London, Scotland, and the North, as well as direct links to three major airports. It will include passenger and retail facilities to enhance the experience for passengers and visitors.

This role is suitable for a Section Engineer to act as Assistant Package Manager for various permanent works packages related to the public realm and external works areas.

What you'll be doing
  1. Scope & Planning – Conduct scope reviews, identify gaps, assess constructability, and analyze construction sequences & programme risks.
  2. Coordination & Risk Management – Identify and resolve interface clashes, oversee subcontractor deliverables, and ensure seamless team communication.
  3. Quality & Compliance – Monitor subcontractor performance, ensure quality assurance, manage activity readiness certifications, and drive non-conformance closeouts.
  4. Procurement & Documentation – Prepare scope documents, Safe Work Instructions (SWIs), and manage documentation approvals with the wider BBVS team.
  5. Site Management – Supervise subcontractor activities, track workforce & plant usage, maintain daily progress reports, and escalate site issues as needed.
  6. Innovation & Value Engineering – Research and implement innovative construction solutions and value engineering proposals to optimize project delivery.
  7. Safety & Environment – Promote a safe and sustainable working environment across all site activities.
Who we're looking for

Required Qualifications & Experience:

  • BSc, MSc, or BEng in Civil Engineering (or equivalent)
  • CSCS certification
  • Experience in civil engineering on large infrastructure projects
  • Strong understanding of NEC3 contracts and site activity management
  • Ability to monitor subcontractor performance and report effectively

Desirable Qualifications & Experience:

  • SMSTS, PTS, or professional institution membership (ICE)
  • Experience in earthworks, drainage, precast/cast-in RC, and temporary works
  • Familiarity with Network Rail, TfL, Thames Water, and other utilities
  • Knowledge of document control systems (BC, eB, CEMAR)
