Job summary

An established industry player is seeking a Site/Section Engineer to join their Major Projects team in London. This role involves supporting the Package Manager in the delivery of fit-out works at the iconic Old Oak Common development. You'll play a key part in managing subcontractor performance, conducting scope reviews, and ensuring compliance with safety and quality standards. Qualifications

About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Site/Section Engineer (Assistant Package Manager) to join our Major Projects team at the iconic Old Oak Common development in London.

HS2's new c. £1 billion Old Oak Common station will become the UK's best-connected rail station upon completion. Our joint venture, Balfour Beatty VINCI SYTRA, will be responsible for the design, construction, and commissioning of the station in Northwest London.

The station will feature six underground platforms and up to eight on the adjacent Great Western Main Line, providing high-speed rail services to the Midlands, central London, Scotland, and the North, as well as direct services to three major airports. It will also include passenger and retail facilities to enhance the customer experience.

Section Engineer

Level to act as Assistant Package Manager for Fit Out Packages

What you'll be doing
  1. Support the Package Manager or independently lead aspects of fit-out works delivery.
  2. Conduct scope reviews, identify gaps, and assess constructability, sequencing, and programme feasibility.
  3. Analyse interfaces and proactively manage risks, including resolving design and construction clashes.
  4. Develop and implement value engineering proposals and innovative construction solutions.
  5. Prepare procurement documentation, including Scope of Works and Safe Work Instructions (SWIs).
  6. Manage subcontractor performance, deliverables, and on-site activities, ensuring safety, quality, and environmental compliance.
  7. Oversee Activity Readiness certification, documentation approval processes, and interface with wider BBVS teams.
  8. Ensure thorough progress reporting, daily diaries, and accurate tracking of labour, plant, and resources.
  9. Act as the primary site contact for BBVS Package Managers, coordinating subcontractor issues and escalating as needed.
Who we're looking for
Qualifications & Certifications

Essential:

  • BSc, MSc, or BEng in Civil Engineering or equivalent GNVQ
  • Valid CSCS card
  • Experience in a related construction environment
  • Eligibility to live and work permanently in the UK

Desirable:

  • SMSTS certification
  • PTS (Personal Track Safety)
  • Membership of a relevant professional institution (e.g., ICE)
Skills & Experience

Essential:

  • Strong understanding of NEC3 contracts and the identification of notifiable events
  • Broad civil engineering experience on large-scale infrastructure projects
  • Ability to interpret and navigate Works Information and contract documentation
  • Proven experience in site management, including subcontractor coordination and performance monitoring
  • Familiarity with multidisciplinary interfaces, temporary works, and lifting operations
  • Clear and reliable reporting and communication skills

Desirable:

  • Background in civils and/or fit-out works
  • Experience working with Network Rail and Transport for London (TfL) interfaces
  • Competence in NEC3 contract administration and communication
  • Working knowledge of document control platforms (e.g., ALIM, eB, CEMAR)
