About the role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for a Site/Section Engineer (Assistant Package Manager) to join our Major Projects team at the iconic Old Oak Common development in London.

HS2's new c. £1 billion Old Oak Common station will become the UK's most connected rail station upon completion. Our Balfour Beatty VINCI SYTRA joint venture will oversee the final design, construction, and commissioning of this station in Northwest London.

The station will feature six underground platforms and up to eight on the adjacent Great Western Main Line, providing high-speed rail services to the Midlands, central London, Scotland, and the North, as well as direct connections to three major airports. It will include passenger and retail facilities, offering an exceptional experience for passengers and visitors.

Role Overview

The position is at the Section Engineer level, acting as Assistant Package Manager for fitout subcontract packages. You will report to the Package Manager and Senior Package Manager, assisting in managing various subcontractor packages related to architectural finishes, such as metalwork, cladding, flooring, wall linings, and ceilings. You will also support interface management with other work packages like MEPH, lifts, and escalators.

Key Responsibilities
  1. Lead or support delivery of architectural finishes packages from scope review through to handover.
  2. Manage subcontractors, site activities, and interface coordination to ensure programme, quality, and safety compliance.
  3. Drive constructability reviews, value engineering, and innovation.
  4. Maintain documentation, progress reports, and act as site liaison for Package Managers.
  5. Ensure safe systems of work, environmental compliance, and readiness certification.
  6. Demonstrate strong leadership, communication, and team management skills.
  7. Have sound knowledge of HSE legislation, risk assessment, and incident management.
  8. Be proficient in engineering control, QA/QC, and handover documentation.
  9. Be commercially aware with experience in programme planning, procurement, and KPI tracking.
  10. Be proactive, solution-focused, and collaborative.
Candidate Requirements
Essential
  • Degree (BSc, MSc, BEng) in Civil Engineering or equivalent qualification
  • Valid CSCS card
  • Civil engineering experience on major infrastructure projects, especially fit-out
  • Strong leadership and site management skills
  • Understanding of NEC3 contracts and notifiable events
  • Confidence in subcontractor coordination and reporting
  • Eligibility to work and reside in the UK
Desirable
  • SMSTS, PTS certification
  • Membership of a professional institution (e.g., ICE)
  • Experience with document control systems (e.g., BC, eB, CEMAR)
  • Background in temporary works, lifting operations, and multidisciplinary coordination
