Assistant Librarian

Your new role

To support the City of London’s library collections across Guildhall Library, the Lending Libraries (in particular the Barbican Music Library), and The London Archives by undertaking the cataloguing and classification of library resources, print, multimedia, and digital materials to ensure these are accessible to all users.

Key Accountabilities

1. Under the direction of the Senior Librarian (Rare Books), lead the development and maintenance of cataloguing and classification standards for the City of London and manage authority files, keeping up to date with developments in classification, cataloguing, and authority control. Cascade information and training to colleagues.
2. Perform original cataloguing and classification of library materials.
3. Edit records using AACR2, RDA, Dewey Decimal System, and other in-house classification systems.
4. Provide regular reports on progress against targets, take remedial action to address poor performance, gather usage statistics, and produce reports as required.
5. Share cataloguing knowledge and train/support staff, volunteers, and users in cataloguing matters.
6. Maintain the subject indexes for the Lending and Reference Libraries.

What you'll need to succeed

Essential

• Be registered with the Chartered Institute of Library and Information Professionals (CILIP).
• Experience working in a library or museum.
• Experience engaging with the public.
• Experience cataloguing onto online systems.
