Job Description

University of Nottingham Ningbo China is seeking to recruit an Assistant Lab Technician in the School of Health and Life Sciences to support the exciting growth of Psychology at UNNC, including the new suite of teaching and research laboratories now being established. The purpose of this role is to provide technical and administrative support to Psychology students and staff, and to assist with the day-to-day running of the teaching and research laboratories. The role holder will help allocate resources and provide basic technical support and training in the use of equipment and experimental techniques to relevant staff and students. The role holder will be responsible for the upkeep of designated laboratories, supporting the use of equipment and experimental software, and assisting in monitoring equipment inventories and consumable stocks.

Main responsibilities include:
  • Prepare and set up laboratory equipment, stimuli, and materials for practical teaching sessions across Psychology modules. Provide timely technical advice and hands-on training to staff and students on the use of laboratory equipment, experimental and survey software (e.g., PsychoPy, E-Prime, Qualtrics), statistical and programming environments (e.g., SPSS, R, and Python), and computational facilities. Guide and support students during laboratory sessions and contribute technical input to curriculum development.
  • Assist academic staff and postgraduate researchers with the setup, calibration and routine operation of specialist research equipment, including eye-tracking, psychophysiological recording, and virtual reality systems as these are introduced, helping to meet the technical requirements of Psychology research projects.
  • Conduct regular routine maintenance, fault diagnosis, and repair of laboratory equipment, either personally or by coordinating with external vendors. Keep appropriate records of maintenance activities and repair histories.
  • Assist with the day-to-day technical running of the Psychology teaching and research laboratories, including coordinating the scheduling of laboratory spaces and helping establish new facilities as programmes grow. Complete documentation, records, and reports accurately to comply with teaching and research quality standards. Where appropriate, liaise with the University of Nottingham UK and Malaysia campuses on laboratory teaching requirements.
  • Assist senior colleagues with ordering routine equipment and consumables, following agreed procurement procedures. Maintain an accurate asset register of all laboratory equipment, software licences, and consumable stock, and provide information to support budget preparation and future purchasing plans.
  • Follow relevant health and safety and ethical guidelines in all laboratory activities. Assist with introducing students and new researchers to safe and appropriate use of equipment.
About You
  • Bachelor's degree in Psychology, Engineering (e.g., Biomedical or Electronic), Computer Science, or a related discipline.
  • Knowledge of psychology methods and laboratory techniques.
  • Demonstrable experience working in a Psychology laboratory or similar technical environment, with hands-on experience operating and maintaining Psychology laboratory equipment.
  • Proficiency with experimental and survey software such as PsychoPy and R, as well as programming language such as Python (or willingness to acquire such skills). Proficiency with advanced statistical models and computational methods is an advantage.
  • Ability to maintain, calibrate, and troubleshoot laboratory equipment, and to set up and support laboratory computers and software.
  • Experience with eye-tracking, EEG, or other psychophysiological recording systems as well as advanced technologies would be an advantage, as would familiarity with virtual reality platforms or computational facilities and methodologies.
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills in English and Mandarin, with the ability to explain technical concepts clearly to non-specialist users.
  • Well-organised, with the ability to work effectively under pressure. Collegial and collaborative in approach, with the ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team. Comfortable working in a multicultural environment and able to communicate across language and cultural boundaries.
  • Previous work in a higher education setting is desirable but not required.
