Job summary

Building Careers UK is seeking an Assistant Estimator to join a growing construction contractor in Middleton. The role involves assisting with competitive estimates for a range of construction and refurbishment projects, reviewing drawings and tender documentation, and producing detailed cost plans.

You will work alongside commercial, operational and pre-construction teams, identifying value engineering opportunities and supporting tender submissions to secure successful contracts.

Qualifications

• 3–4 years estimating experience in construction.
• Experience with main contractor or specialist contractor preferred.
• Ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications.
• Strong commercial awareness and analytical skills.

Responsibilities

• Prepare accurate estimates for construction and refurbishment projects.
• Review drawings, specifications and tender documentation.
• Produce take-offs, cost plans and pricing schedules.
• Obtain and evaluate quotations from subcontractors and suppliers.
• Assist with tender submissions within agreed timescales.
• Identify value engineering opportunities and cost-saving solutions.
• Collaborate with the commercial, operational and pre-construction teams.
• Support risk assessments and commercial reviews during tenders.
• Build and maintain relationships with suppliers, subcontractors and clients.
• Assist handovers to project delivery teams after successful tenders.

The Role

As Estimator, you will be responsible for:

• Assisting with the preparation of accurate and competitive estimates for a wide range of construction and refurbishment projects
• Reviewing drawings, specifications, and tender documentation
• Producing detailed take-offs, cost plans, and pricing schedules
• Obtaining and evaluating quotations from subcontractors and suppliers
• Assisting with the preparation of tender submissions within agreed timescales
• Identifying value engineering opportunities and cost-saving solutions
• Working closely with the commercial, operational, and pre-construction teams
• Supporting risk assessments and commercial reviews during the tender process
• Building and maintaining strong relationships with suppliers, subcontractors, and clients
• Assisting with handovers to project delivery teams following successful tenders

The Ideal Candidate

• Approximately 3-4 years' estimating experience within the construction industry
• Previous experience working for a main contractor or specialist contractor
• Strong understanding of estimating principles and construction methods
• The ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications
• Good commercial awareness and analytical skills
• Excellent communication and organisational abilities
• A proactive attitude with a willingness to learn and develop
• The ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team
• Relevant construction, estimating, or quantity surveying qualifications would be advantageous
