Job summary

The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking an Assistant Accountant to join the Financial Services Team on a temporary 10-month contract. The role is based at Regent Point, Gosforth, with potential movement across other Trust sites to meet service needs.

You will support day-to-day accounts payable and receivable duties, monitor balances, and ensure timely processing of invoices while maintaining VAT compliance.

Qualifications

• Accounting Technician status or progressing towards CCAB qualification or NVQ Level 4 in a numerate subject or equivalent experience.

Responsibilities

• Support day-to-day operations of the Financial Services department to deliver high-quality service to the Trust.
• Work flexibly to meet needs of Financial Services teams.
• Ensure timely processing of transactions relating to Trust activities.
• Maintain debtor records and financial information on finance systems.
• Liaise with colleagues to resolve financial queries and support service improvements.
• Provide supervisory support to Band 3 and Band 2 Financial Services colleagues.

Assistant Accountant

This is an excellent opportunity to join the Financial Services Team on a temporary 10 month contract within a dynamic and fast-paced environment. The successful candidate will ideally have previous experience working within a busy finance office and will demonstrate outstanding communication, organisational, and interpersonal skills, together with a strong commitment to delivering high-quality customer service.

You will be able to work effectively under pressure, managing priorities and meeting tight deadlines while maintaining a high level of accuracy and attention to detail. A proactive and adaptable approach is essential, along with the flexibility to respond positively to evolving working practices and service requirements.

The post is based within the Accounts Receivable Department and will play an important role in supporting the day-to-day operations of the Financial Services Team. The post holder will contribute to the delivery of a consistently high-quality financial service to the Trust, helping to ensure the timely processing and payment of invoices while maintaining accuracy and compliance with VAT regulations and financial procedures.

Please note that this post will be based at Regent Point, Gosforth. However, successful applicants may be required to work across other Trust sites, including the Freeman Hospital and the Royal Victoria Infirmary (RVI), to meet service needs.

Main duties of the job

• Monitor outstanding debts and support the recovery of overdue balances.
• Investigate and resolve invoice and payment queries from patients, suppliers, commissioners, and other external organisations.
• Ensure financial transactions are processed accurately and within agreed timescales.
• Maintain debtor records and financial information on relevant finance systems.
• Liaise effectively with colleagues across the Trust to resolve financial queries and support service improvements.

Job responsibilities

• To support the day-to-day operations of the Financial Services department ensuring the delivery of a consistently high-quality service to the Trust
• To work flexibly as required to meet the needs of the various Financial Services Department teams
• To ensure that transactions relating to the Trusts activities are processed in a timely manner
• To work flexibly and actively assist in the collection or payment of monies relating to the Trusts Activities
• To take immediate action in any remedial adjustments required to ensure the accurate financial recording of the Trusts activities
• To provide support to departmental managers and other finance staff
• To provide supervisory support to Band 3 and Band 2 Financial Services colleagues

Qualifications & Education

• Accounting Technician status or be progressing towards a CCAB accountancy qualification or NVQ Level 4 in a numerate subject or equivalent experience

Knowledge & Experience

• A good level of education in a numerate subject
• Experience in a Finance Department of a busy organisation
• A detailed understanding of accounting procedures
• Knowledge of NHS and non-NHS legislation and how it effects own area of work
• A good working knowledge of financial and non-financial computer systems
• Previous NHS Finance experience
• Show the ability to supervise junior staff

Skills & Abilities

• Able to work autonomously to manage own workload and change priorities as necessary to achieve key tasks, although with advice available if required
• Good communication, planning and organisational skills are essential
• Ability to be able to work independently or part of a team, to ensure strict deadlines are adhered to
• Ability to understand NHS and non-NHS legislation and how it affects own area of work
