Job summary

Assistant Accountant role based in South Leeds, reporting to Senior Accountants. This full-time, office-based position offers exposure to IFRS16, VAT compliance, month-end close, and group accounts consolidation, with opportunities to upskill in Cognos and costing analysis.

You will support overhead costs, balance sheet reconciliations, prepare tax packs, and assist with external audits, while providing finance team coverage and hands-on project involvement to drive continuous improvement.

Qualifications

• Experience in a similar accounting role.
• Strong Excel skills and attention to detail.
• Familiarity with IFRS16 is beneficial.

Responsibilities

• Manage overhead cost lines, including accruals and prepayments.
• Maintain IFRS16 schedules and assist with monthly close.
• Process group accounts for consolidation and prepare recharge invoices.
• Support VAT returns and HMRC compliance processes.
• Assist with external audit information and schedules.
• Undertake ad-hoc financial analysis and project work as directed.

We are currently recruiting for an Assistant Accountant for a £50m t/o business based in South Leeds.

Key duties and responsibilities:

• Manage overhead cost lines, including maintaining supporting schedules and preparing accruals and prepayments
• Manage and maintain IFRS16 schedules
• Process group accounts for consolidation
• Create recharge invoices
• Support with month end statement batch creationRevalue open transactions for changes in foreign exchange rates
• Provide cost reports and financial information to stakeholders
• Manage balance sheet accounts, including detailed reconciliations
• Prepare and submit VAT returns, ensuring compliance with HMRC requirements
• Support the external audit process, including preparation of information and schedules
• Prepare tax packs and supporting information
• Assist with month end and year end closing activities
• Provide operational support for finance-related queries
• Support the wider finance team, providing assistance and cover where required
• Undertake ad-hoc financial analysis and accounting tasks as directed by senior accountants
• Develop knowledge and confidence through hands‑on involvement in projects, processes, and continuous improvement activities

Skills and experience:

You will need to be able to demonstrate previous experience in a similar role, with a strong understanding of financial principles and accounting practices. You will be a competent user of Excel with exceptional attention to detail.

• Previous experience of IFRS16 and Cognos would be advantageous
