About the Company - Our client, a college in North London, is looking for a part-qualified Assistant Accountant to join its dynamic finance team. The Trust comprises two respected educational institutions and offers a collaborative and a supportive working environment. This is a full-time, all-year-round role (36 hours/week), but part-time hours will be considered for the right candidate. The Trust offers an attractive pension scheme, generous holiday allowance, and employee wellbeing benefits, including a cycle-to-work scheme.

About the Role - The Assistant Accountant will be responsible for assisting with various accounting and finance tasks within a busy finance function.

  1. Reconcile bank accounts and manage petty cash and foreign currency for trips.
  2. Maintain accurate records of student transactions, including trip and book deposits.
  3. Handle banking duties such as cash/cheque deposits and responding to banking queries.
  4. Raise sales invoices and input purchase invoices as required.
  5. Ensure correct authorisation of weekly BACS payments.
  6. Manage trust credit card payments and reconcile monthly statements.
  7. Prepare and submit monthly VAT126 and Gift Aid claims to HMRC.
  8. Maintain the Fixed Asset Register and calculate monthly depreciation.
  9. Reconcile bursary accounts and post related journals.
  10. Produce monthly financial reports for a subsidiary lettings company.
  11. Complete reconciliations for trips, fundraising, and other accounts.
  12. Assist with audit schedules and budget preparation, including ESFA returns.
  13. Provide cover for finance team members when needed.
  14. Undertake additional duties as directed by the Assistant Principal (Finance) or SLT.

Required Skills

  • Part-qualified or finalist accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA or equivalent)
  • Proven experience in an accounting or finance assistant role within a busy finance environment
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively within a small team
  • Strong IT literacy, with working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines under pressure
  • Strong attention to detail and a proactive approach to problem-solving

Preferred Skills

  • Experience in education or the public/not-for-profit sector
  • Familiarity with financial reporting systems or accounting software used in academic institutions
  • Knowledge of PSF accounting software and Bookings Plus lettings system
