Job summary

Somerset Council is seeking an Asbestos Manager to lead the Asbestos team, coordinating surveys and compliance across a diverse property portfolio. The role involves directing day-to-day activities, risk mitigation, and delivering external services to schools and public bodies.

You will manage staff, contractors and ensure adherence to UKAS guidance and HSE requirements while supporting service improvements and reporting outcomes.

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years proven asbestos management experience.
• Knowledge of UKAS requirements, guidance and codes of practice for asbestos consultancy.
• Strong understanding of UK asbestos legislation and HSE guidance.
• Experience with property compliance systems and asset management software.
• Experience managing a team and contractors and delivering compliance programmes.
• Awareness of Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and current safety legislation.

Responsibilities

• Provide day-to-day management and technical support to the asbestos team, planning and monitoring performance.
• Allocate work to staff and make operational decisions.
• Oversee the asbestos survey plan to maintain compliance with policy and legislation.
• Respond to emergency asbestos incidents and provide testing guidance.
• Produce reports on asbestos incidents for H&S records.
• Maintain and update the Asbestos Register database.
• Undertake asbestos surveys and site investigations as required.
