Job description
Overview

We\'re looking for enthusiastic volunteers to support our wonderful museum in the heart of Gloucester Docks.

Housed in the heart of Gloucester Docks, the National Waterways Museum takes visitors on a journey through the 200-year history of the docks and accompanying Gloucester & Sharpness Canal.

Volunteers are right at the heart of what we do in the museum and help us keep the history of the Docks and Gloucester & Sharpness Canal alive.

We are looking for volunteers to help in various aspects of the museum experience, whether that be providing historical introductions to visitors, assisting with the gift shop and admissions, or getting involved behind the scenes to help care for the site and its exhibits.

What skills are we looking for? While an interest in local history and heritage can be a bonus, the most important quality we look for is an eagerness to communicate, collaborate and help others. Our team enjoy working together to make the museum experience the best it can be for our customers!

By volunteering with us, you will be part of a team that cares deeply about keeping our museums and history alive and accessible to all.

Why we want you

Our Ambassadors help promote the value of our nations canals and rivers by attending events, being the smiling faces at one of our Welcome Stations, promoting our Share the Space campaigns and engaging with potential and existing supporters and customers alike. As an Ambassador you can help not only represent the Trust, but connect more people to our unique environment and raise awareness for canals.

Our Ambassadors are all about public events, specific opportunities when we invite members of the public to join us, learn more, try a new activity on the waterways and find out more about the Trust.

Our other events focused role (Waterside Leader) is for our volunteers who lead activities at events e.g. guided walks.

We have other roles which complement our Ambassadors by engaging with customers on a day to day basis, outside out events programmes: Rangers, Lock keepers, Explorers, Waterside Champions and Youth Engagement roles.

What you will be doing

  • Attending other organisations’ events and taking the Trust to them
  • Giving talks in the local community to adult groups
  • Promoting the waterways in other ways in your local community
  • Helping at events at our museums and attractions to share our amazing museums’ collection

  • Friendly
  • Reliable
  • Good with people
  • Positive outlook

What\'s in it for you

  • A sense of reward
  • The opportunity to meet lots of interesting people
  • The opportunity to develop your communications skills
