Job summary

The University of Sheffield's AMRC North West invites applications for a Project Engineer - Additive Manufacturing near Blackburn. You will deliver research projects in AM, operate 3D printing and machining equipment, and work with multidisciplinary teams to advance additive manufacturing capabilities.

You will hold a good honours degree in engineering or materials science, understand AM processes and post-processing technologies, and communicate effectively with customers and staff.

Qualifications

• Honours degree in mechanical, manufacturing engineering or materials science, or equivalent AM experience.
• Understanding of AM processes.
• Understanding of post-processing technologies for AM.
• Strong written and verbal communication with customers and staff.
• Ability to analyse and solve problems with long-term implications.
• Curiosity and a willingness to learn.
• Working independently and as part of a team.
• Knowledge of Environment, Health and Safety (EHS) challenges of advanced manufacturing (Desirable)
• Technical Professional Registration or willingness to work towards it (Desirable)
• Understanding of material processing (Desirable)
• Experience in design for AM, material characterization, process modelling and process monitoring (Desirable)

Responsibilities

• Create manufacturing plans, route cards and procedures to support research activities in AM and other advanced manufacturing processes.
• Assist in the delivery of research projects by conducting experiments, collecting, recording and analysing data, and contributing to technical reports.
• Operate additive manufacturing equipment and associated technologies, including 3D printers, 5-axis machine tools and post-processing equipment, following established procedures.
• Undertake material characterisation activities, including sample preparation, tensile testing, hardness testing and X-ray CT scanning.
• Support the development and optimisation of AM processes through design for AM, process monitoring, material characterisation and process evaluation where appropriate.
• Ensure all work is carried out in accordance with quality standards, safe working practices, and EHS requirements.
• Plan and manage individual workloads to meet project objectives and timescales.
• Work effectively both independently and as part of multidisciplinary project teams, communicating progress and technical findings clearly to colleagues and stakeholders.
• Assist in coordinating project activities by monitoring progress against milestones and contributing to the successful delivery of project outcomes.
• Provide technical support and guidance on AM processes, showing willingness to learn and develop new skills.
• Contribute to the procurement and preparation of materials, equipment and consumables for research activities.
• Support colleagues across research groups and contribute to multiple projects to meet organisational priorities.
• Contribute to continuous improvement activities to enhance manufacturing processes, research methods and laboratory practices.
• Promote ethical, sustainable and responsible engineering practices in line with the University's sustainability strategy.
