Job description

Job Opportunity: Alternative Provision Lead - SEN School

Location: Rochdale

Start Date: ASAP

Contract: Temporary to Permanent or Permanent

Salary: £35,000-£45,000 per annum

Are you a passionate educator ready to make a real difference?

We are seeking a dedicated, resilient and motivated Alternative Provision Lead to join an SEN school in Rochdale, supporting secondary-aged young people who require an alternative to mainstream education.

This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified teacher with leadership experience and a strong understanding of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs or Emotional, Social, Behavioural Difficulties (ESBD) to lead a specialist provision and help young people re-engage with education.

The provision delivers 12-week intervention programmes for young people who have been excluded from mainstream school. Many of the students have a strong interest in sports, so a candidate with a sporting background or experience using sport to engage young people would be particularly desirable.

The Role

As Alternative Provision Lead, you will be responsible for helping to create a structured, supportive and engaging environment where young people can rebuild confidence, develop positive behaviours and work towards successful reintegration into education or their next steps.

Key responsibilities will include:
  • Leading and coordinating the day-to-day running of the alternative provision.
  • Supporting and motivating secondary-aged pupils with SEMH or ESBD needs.
  • Developing positive relationships with young people who may have experienced exclusion or difficulties within mainstream education.
  • Promoting positive behaviour, engagement, resilience and personal development.
  • Supporting the delivery of structured, meaningful 12-week intervention programmes.
  • Working collaboratively with staff, families and relevant professionals to improve outcomes for pupils.
  • Using creative approaches, including sport and practical activities where appropriate, to engage learners and encourage participation.
  • Helping to maintain a safe, consistent and inclusive learning environment.
Essential Requirements
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or an appropriate recognised teaching qualification.
  • Previous experience working with young people with SEMH or ESBD needs.
  • Some form of leadership experience, such as leading a team, department, provision or educational initiative. You do not need to have previously worked as a Headteacher.
  • A strong understanding of behaviour management, pupil engagement and the challenges faced by young people excluded from mainstream education.
  • A positive, patient and resilient approach, with the ability to build trust and establish clear boundaries.
  • An enhanced DBS on the Update Service, or a willingness to apply for a new DBS check.
Desirable Experience
  • A background in sports coaching, sports education or physical activity.
  • Experience working within alternative provision, PRUs, SEN schools or similar specialist settings.
  • Experience supporting reintegration into mainstream education or helping young people overcome barriers to learning.
What's on Offer?
  • A competitive salary of £35,000-£45,000 per annum, depending on experience.
  • The flexibility of a temporary-to-permanent or permanent appointment.
  • An ASAP start for the right candidate.
  • The opportunity to lead a provision that makes a meaningful difference to young people's lives.
  • The chance to shape engaging interventions and help pupils develop the skills and confidence they need to move forward.

Help young people rediscover their potential, re-engage with learning and build a more positive future.
